5 reasons why you may be struggling to get promoted

After some time in your company, you feel you deserve a raise and more responsibilities. However, you are dreading this request and don't know how to get started. While some people don't hesitate to go for it to get what they want, others want to make their mark and be impeccable before asking. What is the right method and how to avoid refusal from your superiors? Discover some tips to better understand your lack of progress.

1) You lack patience

First thing to take into account: time. Indeed, if you are hoping for a promotion, you will need a little patience. In general, you avoid asking for a salary increase when you have only been with the company for a few months. Instead, you should wait at least a year, time to prove yourself within the company and to have real arguments to put forward during negotiations.

2) You don't communicate enough

So we arrive at the second step: discussing it. It's well known that if you don't ask for your promotion, it won't come to you! To show your motivation and get what you want, you will have to talk to your manager.

To prepare, clearly define your goals and vision for your professional future. Also ask your superiors what prospects you can expect in one or several years. Indeed, it is better to think about your future by considering a two-year plan rather than an immediate evolution.

3) You are too passive

While some managers like executors, this is not the case for all. Indeed, passive behavior and too much discretion can then appear as a lack of investment on your part and harm you in the eyes of your manager. To better show your willingness, do not hesitate to ask questions, try to understand, and take initiatives. When necessary, be critical and express your point of view. This will make you appear as someone thoughtful, invested and reliable, who seeks above all to solve the problems facing the company. A good reason to get a raise, right?

4) You work too much (despite quality)

To show your determination, do you tend to spend a lot more time at the office, even if it means no longer counting your hours? However, this strategy would not necessarily be the best to adopt. Indeed, spending too much time at work could, on the contrary, devalue it. The reason ? By doing more, you risk neglecting quality…

5) You manage your autonomy poorly

In terms of autonomy, it’s all a question of balance! While it is important to know that you are heading in the right direction regarding your tasks to be carried out, it is also very appreciable that you show your ability to move forward alone by taking responsibility.

A piece of advice: don’t be “too” independent either. Indeed, questioning your colleagues and superiors is an excellent way to progress because, in addition to providing you with new knowledge and skills, it shows your open-mindedness and your investment.

Either way, just because you're denied a promotion doesn't mean you haven't progressed or that you're not someone you can trust. In reality, this type of evolution depends above all on the opportunities presented to you, varying from one company to another. Keep in mind that there is also a luck factor. If even by applying these tips, your increase does not materialize, it may be time to change companies with other challenges and perhaps other prospects for development that are more interesting for you!
