What's this

In the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is one of the typical methods for treating various ailments, from acute episodic to chronic ones. It has very ancient origins and is practiced on different points of the skin and body in correspondence with energy points that cross it. In fact, our body in TCM is crossed by energy lines that must be thought of as real "valves" that reveal the excess or defect of energy in some internal organs. These valves can be modulated if you want to re-establish the correct energy flow and the needles that are inserted are used for this.

Acupuncturists specialize in this delicate and specific therapy and know perfectly well at what depth or not to insert and in what number and at what distance from each other on the skin. Health progress determines the progress of the sessions and the positioning of the needles. Of very ancient origins, it makes its official appearance in the West in 1939, the year in which the French diplomat George Soulié de Morant published a personal translation of some terms related to this practice. Thanks to this personal translation, many terms related to this practice entered the West, such as "meridian", "vital energy", "meridian points". The first centers arose in Europe and then in the United States. In 2010, UNESCO declared acupuncture a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Acupuncture restores the balance of the whole body and internal harmony. The results are seen moment by moment and session after session. It is a complete and unique path that changes the patient in progress throughout the cycle.

In addition to osteoarticular or muscle pain or inflammatory states affecting the joints, acupuncture has excellent effects as regards the imbalance affecting the internal organs. Excellent for improving cardiovascular conditions or blood or lymphatic circulation. The effects are also really positive with regard to the nervous system and it is no coincidence that acupuncture is used for depressive states, anxiety or stress. It also has a positive effect on recurring moods (fear, nervousness, sadness, panic, anger). Depending on how serious the disorder is, the application and the number of sessions vary. Acupuncture also treats diarrhea or constipation, dyspepsia, diabetes, functional colitis. Also for skin disorders such as acne, eczema, herpes simplex or zoster.

Even those who want to quit smoking or those who want to improve their sleep-wake rhythm in cases of even severe insomnia resort to acupuncture. This practice remains a very useful tool for the woman who wants to experience pregnancy well: it alleviates nausea, back pain and improves the global flow of energy. Acupuncture also works very well to treat gynecological or andrological disorders of various kinds, from vaginal dryness to erectile dysfunction to problems such as candida or infections affecting the urogenital system, as well as to accompany the woman in the process of menopause.

A typical session

Usually the acupuncturist in the first session has a card filled out or asks specific questions about the patient and the patient's family history at the level of pathologies and imbalances. This recognition becomes essential to keep data which can then be developed. The history and experience of the patient, including also the profession and habits of movement and food, are very useful to the doctor to treat the patient in the best way.

The patient is invited to lie down or sit on the bed (depending on the application points that the doctor envisages) and prepares for the insertion of the needles. The physician always checks with the patient if there is too much local or general pain while the disposable needles are inserted.

Depending on the first session and the dialogue with the patient, the acupuncturist decides and defines a basic cycle that could undergo variations depending on the patient's biological responses. Usually the first session has a high cost that is dissolved if you take the whole cycle, but it always depends on acupuncturist to acupuncturist. However, it always oscillates between prices ranging from 50 to 100 euros for the first session. A single session lasts from 20 to 40 minutes and includes the investigation of the patient's state of health each time.

Usually the patient does not feel pain during the moment of insertion unless it is particularly inflamed areas; in general, however, the sensations vary according to the subject and the type of stimulation, but many patients describe the sensation as a tingling or a mild electric shock. Usually, when the needle "does its duty", there is a feeling of heaviness which for the acupuncturist means the arrival of new vital energy in the affected part. At the end of the session, the acupuncturist could give general information on the diet, gymnastics or the use of herbs with which to make decoctions, dry extracts, infusions.
