Forgetting treatments or not strictly following the doctor's prescriptions makes it difficult to prevent diseases, especially cardiovascular ones
The more a condition to be treated is maintained over time, the lower the chances that the treatments are followed properly. And, unfortunately, it becomes more difficult to achieve those objectives that appear to be fundamental in a preventive key, especially for those at risk of cardiovascular disease.
High cholesterol and hypertension, in fact, do not create problems and therefore we tend to "forget" the doctor's prescriptions. In Italy, today, for these problems only 50 percent of over 65s correctly follow the prescriptions. In short, more attention is needed to better control the risks to the heart. And not only……..
The expert's advice
"Therapeutic adherence reflects the patient's ability to accurately and consistently comply with the doctor's recommendations regarding the doses, times and frequency of taking the drug for the entire duration of therapy – explains Massimo Volpe, Chair Director and UOC Cardiology at the Sapienza University of Rome – Sant'Andrea Hospital. There may be several causes of non-adherence, including forgetfulness, complexity, duration and any side effects of the treatment in progress, lack of awareness of the severity of the disease, fear of dependence, lack of motivation. "
In chronic diseases it is particularly difficult to ensure adherence for very long periods, sometimes for a lifetime, also due to the fact that often in these conditions patients have other diseases and therefore take different drugs. The important thing, in any case, is to remember that adherence to therapies is a key step in the prevention of heart attack and stroke.
Respecting the doctor's prescriptions regarding therapy (doses, times of intake, duration) is essential for the success of the treatment itself, especially in chronic conditions and in particular in cardiovascular diseases. On the contrary, adherence is higher in conditions in which the person is well informed about their condition and therefore the reason why they must take one or more drugs; has an open dialogue with his own doctor, in whom he has confidence; believes in the effectiveness of the prescribed treatment, for example because it detects benefits.
Then there may also be solutions that the doctor can indicate on a case-by-case basis: for example, we know that in chronic diseases it is particularly difficult to guarantee adherence for very long periods, sometimes forever, also thanks to the fact that often in these conditions patients take other drugs. From this point of view, single pill combinations of several drugs favor better adherence ”.
A web-series to remember the treatments
To "tell" with a smile about the importance of adherence to care, the "Chronic Impatient" part, a web series that aims to raise awareness of the importance of adherence to treatments to control and live with chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular and metabolic ones. In the episodes the daily lives of six couples of people are told in an ironic way who, despite an initial difficulty, have learned the importance of correctly following the doctor's prescriptions and through a series of funny gags dispense valuable advice to promote behaviors that favor a better quality of life for those who have to live with this kind of chronic pathology.
