After-school DSA: a springboard to acquire a study method

The goal is not to take the place of the kids and do their homework for them, but to act as a springboard to study autonomy and emotional well-being

Afterschool for students with SLD: a springboard to acquire a study method. The goal is not to take the place of the kids and do their homework for them, but to act as a springboard towards study autonomy and emotional and academic well-being.

The after-school D + Definitely Super Fascinating

“Let's face it right away: we are a springboard, not a dinghy and not even a donut”. These are the words with which Valentina Secchi presents the after-school specialist for children and teenagers with SLD and SEN.

Because the boat represents the repetitions and the donut the doing homework instead of the kids.

The mission of the D + Definitely Super Fascinating after-school program, on the other hand, is to help students from the third grade to the fifth grade to build an effective study method suitable for their learning style.

So a springboard, which supports the student towards autonomy in the study and consequently towards emotional and scholastic well-being.

The D + method Definitely Super Fascinating

The after-school watchwords are: self-esteem, motivation and self-efficacy.

The after-school activity focuses heavily on teamwork, in the belief that comparison between peers is a fundamental aid for learning.

Creativity is also stimulated and encouraged because it is normal for a person with SLD to seek ways of expression other than traditional ones, to compensate for the sense of inadequacy he feels in comparison with others.

We must therefore ensure that these children and young people shake off the label of "incapable", enhancing the individual resources of each one in a climate of gratifying learning.

This is Valentina's goal, convinced that SLD does not mean Specific Learning Disorders, but Definitely Super Fascinating!
