Antioxidant diet with grapefruit juice

Tasty and refreshing, grapefruit juice is a real cure-all thanks to its antioxidants

The 10 foods with the most antioxidants that protect the body

Antioxidants are very important substances for our body, which is why our diet should be rich in foods that contain good quantities of them. Grapefruit juice is a healthy and tasty alternative to fill up on antioxidants even when we are not hungry.

Grapefruit is a tropical fruit with a sour taste, and has a very interesting nutritional profile. It is an excellent source of fiber, vitamins and mineral salts that play a fundamental role in the proper functioning of our body. A truly delicious juice is extracted from this fruit, useful for enriching our diet with its varied content of antioxidants.

These nutrients act against the formation of free radicals, molecules that damage the cellular structure and lead to premature aging, with an increased risk of developing various diseases. Among the antioxidants of which grapefruit juice is richer, naringin stands out: it is a flavonoid with important therapeutic properties, useful in counteracting the onset of chronic diseases and heart problems.

According to a review published in Advances in Nutrition, naringin appears to be highly effective in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, although its mechanisms of action have yet to be thoroughly studied. Further studies have instead demonstrated its anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, preventing genetic damage caused by oxidative stress.

Grapefruit juice is an excellent source of vitamin C, also a powerful antioxidant: with a glass we can take almost 100% of the recommended daily allowance. Vitamin C has proved useful in many metabolic processes: for example, it increases the absorption of iron and the availability of selenium, two essential minerals for the functioning of the body. It also promotes the development of the immune system and, as shown by several studies, helps to reduce the duration of colds.

In addition to antioxidants, grapefruit juice contains good amounts of other substances that are important for health. It is rich in potassium, which helps to keep blood pressure under control and has a protective action on the heart, but also in folate, essential for proper development of the nervous system. The fibers also improve intestinal transit and are useful for weight loss: they increase the sense of satiety and reduce the absorption of sugars and fats.

Citric acid, also present in excellent quantities, is a panacea for the stomach since it stimulates the production of digestive enzymes. Finally, a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food highlighted how grapefruit juice can help improve bone density, preventing pathologies such as osteoporosis.

It should be remembered, however, that the consumption of grapefruit juice is contraindicated in many cases: this drink contains substances capable of interacting with the liver's ability to metabolize certain drugs, including for example statins to lower cholesterol, calcium channel blockers, antibiotics, benzodiazepines and chemotherapeutic agents. This is why it is very important to seek the advice of your doctor if you are following drug therapies.
