Back to school in case of a simple cold or seasonal flu

The law does not provide for certificates, but the CTS recommends it. For this reason the answer on the certificate to bring or not is vague and above all different from Region to Region. In Lazio, for example, in the event of absences of more than five days, a medical certificate is required. In Veneto, Liguria and Piedmont, according to widespread guidelines, self-certification by parents seems to be sufficient. Some other Regions instead accept the return without a certificate and without self-declaration: it happens in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige, Umbria and Marche where there is a focus on mutual trust between school and family. If the school still suspects COVID symptoms, in the absence of a tampon, school leaders may feel entitled to refuse readmission.

Return to school in case of positive COVID-19

If the result of the swab is positive, "to return to school, once the child is cured, he will need two negative swabs and a certificate from the pediatrician. In addition, the ASL will prescribe quarantine to parents, presumably to the class and teachers who came into contact with the pupil in the 48 hours preceding the symptoms.

Back to school in case of negative swab

If the swab is negative, the pupil, in the opinion of the pediatrician or attending physician, repeats the test after 2-3 days. The pupil must still remain at home until clinical recovery and negative confirmation of the second test. In the event of a diagnosis of a pathology other than Covid-19 (negative swab), the pupil will remain at home until clinical recovery following the indications of the attending physician who will draw up a certificate that the child / student can return to school because the path has been followed. diagnostic-therapeutic and prevention for COVID-19.

Symptoms that indicate COVID-19 in the child

Fever above 37.5 and chills, newly developed cough, difficulty breathing, cold or runny nose, sore throat, diarrhea and sudden loss of smell (anosmia) or decreased sense of smell (hyposmia), loss of taste ( ageusia) or altered taste (dysgeusia), are the conditions that could bring a child back into the COVID-19 path.

My child gets sick at home and has symptoms of COVID-19: what to do?

In the case of temperatures above 37.5 ° or suspicious symptoms (such as cough, rhinorrhea), parents must call the pediatrician for a telephone consultation without going to the office in person. The doctor will refer the ASL for the swab or prescribe another treatment. Parents themselves must report school absence for health reasons to the school.

My son has a fever. Can you go to school?

No. The Safety Protocol and the instructions of the Technical Scientific Committee provide for the obligation to stay at home in the presence of temperatures over 37.5 ° or other flu-like symptoms.

Are there any connection figures between the National Health System and schools?

Yes. Each school identifies a school contact for COVID-19, possibly one for each complex, who plays an interface role with the Prevention Department of the relevant Local Health Authority. It is also necessary to identify a replacement to avoid interruption of the procedures in case of absence of the contact person.

How should the school proceed if a pupil has symptoms of COVID-19?

School staff who become aware of a symptomatic pupil must notify the School Contact for COVID-19 who immediately warns the parents / legal guardian. The pupil must be equipped with a surgical mask (if older than six years) and housed in a dedicated room where it will be necessary to proceed with the possible detection of body temperature, by the school staff identified, through the use of thermometers that do not provide for contact. The minor must not be left alone but in the company of an adult who preferably must not present risk factors and who must maintain, where possible, the physical distance of at least one meter and wear the surgical mask until the pupil is entrusted to a parent / legal guardian. Parents should contact the pediatrician or general practitioner for clinical evaluation (telephone triage) of the case.

My son is living with an infected person. What to do?

Upon assessment by the Prevention Department, the pupil will be placed in quarantine. Any close contacts (eg classmates) do not require quarantine, unless further assessments by the Department of Prevention.

How should the premises be cleaned in the event of a COVID-19 positive pupil?

It is necessary to proceed with an extraordinary sanitation of the school, if 7 days or less have passed since the positive person was in the structure. For safety, the areas used by the positive person must be closed until the sanitization is completed, opening doors and windows to facilitate the circulation of air in the environment.

Who prescribes the quarantine for students of a class and / or the closure of a school or part of it?

If a pupil and / or worker test positive for COVID-19, the Prevention Department will evaluate the possibility of prescribing quarantine to all students of the same class and to any exposed school staff that is configured as close contact. The closure of a school or part of it must be evaluated by the Prevention Department of the ASL.
