To be precise, it is necessary to speak of soluble fibers, in particular pectin. Just to give a few numbers regarding the presence of these nutrients, remember that a single teaspoon of basil seeds – just under 15 grams – provides about 25% of the RDI of fiber for a healthy adult person.

Science has repeatedly questioned the impact of taking pectin on health. Among the many studies that have been carried out on this topic, it is worth mentioning a research work conducted at the University of Aberdeen and dating back to 2016.

The experts who managed it, focused in particular on the effects of pectin consumption as regards the levels of satiety and the decrease in adiposity in obese rats. Following follow-up and following a comparison with the impact of protein intake, it was possible to find a greater effectiveness of pectin which, in addition, contributed to the creation of a fermentation environment more inclined to intestinal health.

Often used in the food industry for the preparation of thickeners, basil seeds are also known for the presence of vegetable compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids. There is nothing to say: the benefits to consider are many! Among these it is possible to mention the presence of omega 3 fats. Going into detail, we point out that almost half of these anti-inflammatory nutrients are alpha-linoleic acid, a portentous ally of heart health and the prevention of heart attacks, hypertension and atherosclerosis.

At this point, it is natural to wonder how to consume basil seeds. The alternatives are many: they can be used for the preparation of smoothies, but can also be added to tasty mixed salads or yogurt. In cases where it is decided to use them for the preparation of baked products, it is good to grind them first and use them as a substitute for part of the flour dose.
