Buffalo milk is a tasty drink rich in beneficial properties for our body
Known mainly in the Mediterranean areas, where it is used to prepare delicious cheeses, buffalo milk is a drink with a particularly sweet taste and a very distinctive smell. It also has many beneficial properties for the body, let's find out which are the main ones.
Compared to cow's milk, which is much more widespread in our country, buffalo milk is more caloric: a cup (corresponding to about 250 ml of drink) provides 237 calories. But it is also much more nutritious, thanks to the important amounts of proteins, vitamins and minerals it contains. If you particularly like its taste and don't want to give it up while on a diet, no problem: being highly satiating, a glass helps reduce the sense of hunger and will help you keep the quantities of food ingested under control.
Buffalo milk is an excellent source of protein, essential substances for the growth and renewal of tissues, but also for the development of the immune system. Casein, which is one of the main proteins contained in it, appears to have positive effects on the bones. A comparative study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, showed how some peptides derived from casein improved bone density in rats.
This drink also has an important vitamin supply: in particular, it is rich in B vitamins, which play a key role in the functioning of our metabolism. Buffalo milk also contains good amounts of vitamins A and E, powerful antioxidants that reduce the onset of free radicals and the risk of related diseases. As shown by a study published in Lipids in Health and Diseases, much of its antioxidant action is however carried out by the presence of monounsaturated fatty acids.
Buffalo milk has a protective action against the heart and the cardiovascular system in general. Beta-lactoglobulin, a whey protein, has shown in vitro the ability to inhibit a particular enzyme responsible for increasing blood pressure and narrowing of blood vessels. Potassium, contained in good quantities in the drink, also contributes to reducing the risk of hypertension.
Finally, buffalo milk is an excellent source of mineral salts. Calcium plays a fundamental role in bone development and prevents the onset of osteoporosis, while phosphorus – in addition to promoting the absorption of calcium by the body – improves concentration and gives energy.
This drink is contraindicated in those suffering from lactose intolerance, since it contains larger quantities than cow's milk, and for allergy to milk proteins. It could also interfere with the intake of particular antibiotics, so ask your doctor to resolve any doubts.
