Breastfeeding is a very special moment both for the mother and the child, a moment of union that must be faced with some changes. Let's find out how to play sports together
New mothers, especially with their first child, have thousands of questions about breastfeeding. Breast milk is the best food for newborns, in fact it contains all the defense substances, such as lactoferrin and lysozyme, which the child does not yet know how to produce on his own. However, breastfeeding is also important for the mother, in fact it allows to consume about 500 calories a day. The sport must not therefore be too strenuous but, having to maintain a varied diet, the woman can get back into shape by disposing of the extra pounds and toning the muscles with some targeted exercise, regaining self-esteem and a perfect physical shape after pregnancy.
Sport during breastfeeding has no consequences on the quality of the milk or its properties: according to a recent publication, in fact, the milk of some mothers who practiced sports was absolutely identical to that of women who did not. However, it is important to avoid all those exercises that involve an excessive spreading of the legs, or force you to sit for a prolonged time, such as the exercise bike, especially if you have suffered an episiotomy. Physical activity must also be moderate, because excessive production of lactic acid would make the taste of milk bitter and not easily digestible for the child.
It is advisable to start with exercises on the abdominal and pectoral area. Try also the soft gymnastics, the walks, maybe with the stroller and in the company of other mothers. It is also essential to drink a lot, replenishing the loss of liquids due to sweating, in fact water is the basis of the production of breast milk. Also pay attention to the sports bra, choose a comfortable size, suitable for your new size, so as not to compress the breast and avoiding problems with breastfeeding. Finally, remember to respect the times of the child, adapt your exercises to the needs of the newborn: physical activity should take place between one meal and another, in fact it is proven that milk production is greater especially when the child can feed freely and question. For example, in the first few weeks the baby eats every two to three hours, so you can reserve yourself an hour a couple of times a week for your exercises.
