Candida is a fungus normally present in our body, which, in conditions of alteration of the bacterial flora or lowering of the immune defenses, can multiply excessively, causing infections, in particular mucous membranes. Among the different species, the most common and known is Candida albicans, responsible for infections especially at the genital level, particularly in women: it is estimated that about 75% of the world female population has suffered at least once in their life. But men are not exempt either. Since the infection can be transmitted sexually, it is good that if one of the two is affected in the couple, the partner also follows a therapy aimed at inhibiting the growth of the fungus, to avoid a "ping pong" effect that prevents healing.

Candida: symptoms and treatment

The symptoms that can make you suspect vaginal candidiasis are irritation, burning, itching, pain in urination or sexual intercourse, white and foul-smelling losses. In men, on the contrary, white spots appear on the glans, which can also present redness and irritation. Confirmation of the diagnosis is carried out by examining tissues taken from the fungus-induced lesions in culture.

The growth of Candida is usually kept under control by other bacteria present in our organism (lactobacilli), therefore when the balance of the bacterial flora is altered, for example due to the use of antibiotics or contraceptives, or in case of stress, in pregnancy or for an incorrect diet (rich in sugars and carbohydrates), the conditions are created for which the fungus can proliferate. Factors that predispose to infection are also hot and humid environments. It is therefore good not to use linens in synthetic fabrics that do not allow perspiration and always dry the private parts well after a shower or sporting activity.

The use of detergents not suitable for washing intimate parts should also be avoided, as they can alter the natural pH. Since, as mentioned, it is the lactobacilli that slow down the growth of Candida, it is good to reintegrate them from the inside, through the consumption of yogurt, for example, but also from the outside: the same yogurt, strictly white and with no added sugar, can be used for local applications, introducing it into the vagina with the help of a swab or syringe.

Equally useful for the purpose is to perform vaginal washes with water and bicarbonate, a solution also suitable for the intimate hygiene of men. In the case of candidiasis, antifungal and antifungal drugs are often prescribed, but Candida can become resistant to their active ingredients, making them ineffective. Better to rely on natural therapies, using substances that strengthen the defenses against Candida that our body already possesses.

The diet against Candida

The diet must be rich in fruit and vegetables, while excesses of carbohydrates, fats, sugars and leavened products must be eliminated. In fact, the fungus feeds on these substances, which can also create fermentation in the intestine, altering the bacterial flora. It is also good to reduce the consumption of red meat and cheeses, in particular those where mold is present. Go ahead instead to whole foods rich in fiber, legumes and garlic, whose antifungal action is widely recognized. Particularly effective are the supplements based on grapefruit seed extract, quercitin, echinacea, melaleuca oil (3 -6 drops) and lactic ferments and probiotics.
