The symptoms of coronavirus infection are similar to those of the flu: fever, cough, breathing difficulties. Hygiene is fundamental
Don't panic. This is the recommendation that needs to be made to avoid the outbreak, or the anxiety that appears to be related to the spread of news related to the CoViD-19 disease, as the coronavirus that has been causing fears around the world for a few weeks has recently been defined. .
At this stage, since there is no vaccine, to stop or at least limit the spread of the virus there are only two measures: isolation of cases and quarantine of contacts, which could develop the infection. And this is what is being done, even after the cases found in Italy. But it is also important to know how to recognize an infection and how to behave.
Symptoms? Similar to those of the flu
Coronavirus has a particular preference for respiratory cells, as evidenced by the fact that many cases of seasonal cold are related to strains of this type of virus. In the case of the virus infection that has "revealed" in China, therefore, we could be faced with a flu-like syndrome.
The symptoms are mainly fever, cough, breathing difficulties, therefore, based on gravity, one can think of something similar to a bad flu. For this reason, experts reiterated the importance of vaccination for this disease, given that it is easier for those who are vaccinated to identify a possible danger, especially in the event of contacts at risk.
Unfortunately, the infection can induce a particularly intense response on the front of inflammation of the lung tissue, up to causing serious pictures of severe acute respiratory insufficiency, but also on this front, we have proof that the control and detection system of cases works: thanks to the knowledge of the genetic sequence of the virus it was possible to obtain a rapid diagnostic test and therefore to recognize early who contracted the infection. This measure can be extremely simple to associate with those available, such as isolation or quarantine.
At the moment, unfortunately, there are no targeted drugs to attack the virus directly, even if you are using medicines that can be effective. And it is therefore essential that, in the most serious cases, all treatments to support the respiratory function are available that can allow you to overcome the most acute phase of the picture.
To worry, if anything, is another aspect: it is now confirmed that the virus is also transmitted by people who have no symptoms. This makes it more difficult to identify early who could have contracted the infection which also has a fairly long incubation. For this reason, it is always necessary to keep in touch with your general practitioner and report pictures from home that could somehow remember the infection. In short, attention needs to be kept high, using the weapons we have available to curb the epidemic.
In this sense, the Ministry of Health has developed a new ordinance that provides mandatory quarantine isolation measures for close contacts with a positive case in addition to active home surveillance for those who have been in risk areas for the past two weeks. These people must report their situation to the local health authorities.
We focus on hygiene
The virus enters the body through the respiratory tract and eyes, which is why it is essential to pay particular attention to hygiene. Prevention rules must always be kept in mind, as is done (or should be done) with any type of infection that is transmitted by the respiratory route. Which means washing your hands often, carefully, using soap and water or alcoholic solutions and using disposable tissues to blow your nose, taking care to check for sneezing or coughing.
Here are the 10 rules drawn up by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) and the Ministry of Health to protect yourself from the coronavirus.
The transmission, regardless of the data on the permanence of the virus externally, takes place by close contact, so there is no reason to keep people at a distance or to close themselves at home. And you don't even have to go around with masks, which besides not being effective in many cases to block the passage of a virus are difficult to carry for a long time. These tools can be useful for those who have a respiratory infection to avoid passing it on to others.
Always remember that in case of "strange" symptoms – never forget that the seasonal flu epidemic is in progress – do not go to the emergency room but refer to your doctor or call 112. And above all, ask for information from certified sources.
