There are dozens of varieties, one more succulent than the other: we are talking about pears, very sweet fruits that appeal to young and old. Their strong point? They are really rich in nutrients that are important for our health, as well as being the perfect allies for those on a diet.

Pears actually have a rather interesting nutritional profile: low in calories, they provide an excellent amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which have many benefits for the body. It is good to remember that most of these substances are present in the skin of the fruit. After an abundant rinse under running water, you can consume them without having to peel them, so as to make a real full of well-being.

Are you on a diet? No problem: pears are rich in water and fiber, which in combination with each other increase the sense of satiety. This makes it easier not to give in to the temptation to have some snacks between meals. A trial conducted on 40 subjects between the ages of 45 and 65 showed that introducing two pears a day into the diet led to the loss of up to 2.7 cm in waist circumference over a period of 12 weeks. The results, published in Food & Function, are very promising.

Fibers are also responsible for good digestion and better intestinal transit. Pectin plays a leading role, one of the main substances contained in pears, since it fights constipation and promotes the health of the intestinal bacterial flora – which, as we all know, is one of the main defenses of our body. Finally, their function against diabetes is very important: the fibers help reduce the absorption of sugar in the blood, avoiding dangerous glycemic peaks.

Pears contain many antioxidants, which counteract the formation of free radicals and the consequent oxidative stress, thus reducing the risk of the onset of various chronic diseases. Their efficacy in protecting the heart has been proven, promoting the elasticity of the arteries and keeping blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol under control. A 17-year study revealed that each daily serving of this fruit decreases the risk of heart disease by 6-7%.

Flavonoids are also known because they help fight chronic inflammation, one of the main risk factors for many diseases. They also have anticancer effects: several researches have highlighted their ability to inhibit cell growth, but further investigation is needed. The red-skinned varieties contain anthocyanins, substances that contribute to the health of the cardiovascular system. In pears with green and yellow peel, on the other hand, there are significant amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin, both essential for sight – especially against age-related diseases.

Pears are a good source of vitamin C, which is important for the development of the immune system, and vitamin K, which plays an important role in blood clotting. Among the mineral salts, however, we find mainly copper and potassium: the first acts at the metabolic level and is an excellent ally against cholesterol, while the second is notoriously effective in keeping pressure under control.
