Diet with squid, low in saturated fat and rich in minerals

These hugely popular shellfish are valuable when it comes to combining healthy diet and taste

Mollusks belonging to the Loginidae family, squid are characterized by important properties for health that it is good to know. Characterized by an energy intake that is around 68 calories per hectogram, they are low in saturated fat. As highlighted by the experts of the Humanitas group, this category of lipids should be taken in moderation – remaining within the limit of 10% of the total calories consumed – as it is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular pathologies.

Heart health can also be preserved thanks to the content of essential omega 3 fatty acids, characterized by a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant efficacy, with obvious advantages regarding the well-being of the heart and arteries (they help prevent the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol) .

Sources of B vitamins – basic for the proper functioning of the metabolism – squid are also known for the presence of phosphorus, a precious mineral for bones and teeth. Analyzing their nutritional profile, there is also the presence of copper, a mineral which, on the other hand, is involved in the synthesis of hemoglobin. Also noteworthy is the content of selenium, another very powerful shield against the damage caused to the body by the activity of free radicals.

We could go on and on to talk about the benefits of squid! These molluscs are in fact also characterized by the presence of other antioxidants. Which exactly? Vitamin A, known for its contribution to improving visual efficiency, vitamin C and vitamin E.

Going back to minerals for a moment, it is appropriate to call into question the presence of calcium, a portentous ally of bone health, but also that of magnesium, fundamental for good blood coagulation and for the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. How can we not refer also to potassium, a mineral crucial for blood pressure regularity and, consequently, crucial for heart health?

When you decide to add calamari to your diet, you should remember their wealth in cholesterol. In light of this, before starting to take them it is advisable to consult your doctor. In the absence of contraindications, you can indulge yourself in the kitchen, preparing dishes such as paella, spaghetti with seafood and stuffed squid.
