There flour is one of those foods that can never be missing in home. At the base of countless sweet and savory recipes, it is a necessary ingredient for the preparation of pasta, bread, desserts and much more.

Undoubtedly it is a product that derives from the grinding of dried fruits or seeds of different plants. It can be of wheat, corn, rye, rice oats and so on, depending on the vegetables, cereals or legumes from which it comes.

Generally that of soft wheat is used for bakery and pastry productswhile that of durum wheat, semolina, is instead used for the production of pasta. But a product that apparently can be preserved without problems, on the contrary, can also incur the wasting process. So let’s find out why we should start putting the flour in the freezer.

That’s why you need to put the flour in the freezer

Despite being one of those foods that seem to us never to perish the flour also goes bad. It is still a food subject to an expiration date and if it is badly preserved it is easy to do so be ruined before even that date.

For example, it may happen that by keeping it in the pantry you find yourself with the butterflies in the flour and at that point all that remains is to throw everything away, because once it has been infested with these annoying insects it is then impossible to recover it. At most you can use it for alternative purposes such as cleaning the stove.

Other times it may happen that the flour turns rancid, perhaps because it has taken on humidity by storing it in the paper bag, it happens that it gets wet, for example by placing it on the worktop while cooking.

Even the heat, in addition to humidity contributes to ruining the flour, especially if the latter are integral or less refined. For example, it is easy for insects to more easily infest flours from organic and untreated grains that contain wheat germ.

Here it is then to prevent the flour from spoiling, first of all it is necessary to transfer it to an airtight container made of glass or metal so as to avoid it being infested with various insects.

Not only that, it will have to be kept in cool and dry place away from sources of heat or humidity.

Another fundamental thing is to keep the pantry clean so as to prevent insects from nesting or forming mold.

Furthermore, if you have a lot of flour or if you have purchased a quantity that we will hardly be able to dispose of in a short time we will be able to keep it in the freezer.

This way we will be sure that the flour will not spoil. To keep it in the freezer just put it in a plastic bag and not a paper one.

When it needs to be used, just remove it from the freezer and use it even if it is still frozen.

In this way we will extend the shelf life of the flour beyond its expiration date. A process, that of flour freezing very useful for those gluten-free or wholemeal varieties more prone to deterioration.
