Now that the new season has arrived, it's time to evaluate the fall-winter 2024/2025 makeup trends. They can be divided into two parts. Fresh, delicate skin and radiant, cold makeup that competes with a dark and brutal option, as well as dark lips. And, of course, nothing prevents us from alternating between the two opposites.
Pink accents on the eyes
“Pink is the biggest trend for autumn,” Swedish makeup artist Linda Gradin told Scandinavian Vogue. “Wear it as a cool liner or base shade, and you'll feel romantic and fresh either way.”
This season, pink eye makeup is bolder, with asymmetrical contours, as seen at Dior and Bach Mai. “The beauty of color is that there are a million ways to interpret it,” Morgan Martini, a makeup artist at Christian Louboutin Beauty who cites pink as one of her favorite shades, told Harper’s Bazaar. “At night, apply a cream blush or pink pigment to the inner corners of the eyes for a dressy look, like Dior.”
Wine, cranberry and burgundy lipstick
No, red lipsticks haven’t lost their place (just look at the shows of Thom Browne, Molly Goddard and Richard Quinn), but they have been pushed back a bit. “This season is all about bold, dark lips,” says Linda Gradin. “Think soft, elegant makeup.”
Makeup artists at the shows took a noir approach, using deep, dark reds reminiscent of winter berries, like those seen at L'Agence. You can go flirty with a blush and false lashes, or go decadent and glam with glitter and a smoky eye, like the models at Alice and Olivia.
On the other hand, cranberry can be worn with minimal makeup. If you keep your skin natural, matte berry lips will be a great contrast, as seen at Giada.
This dark, rich shade on the lips looks beautiful when the edges are slightly blurred, even above the Cupid's bow and at the corners of the mouth. If you leave the edges soft (without lining with a pencil), the color will look more voluminous.
New grunge
With nostalgia for decades past still running strong, it’s no surprise that ’90s-inspired grunge looks are making a comeback. Take the extreme rock star wings at Versace or the black lips at Valentino, both created by makeup artist and brand founder Pat McGrath. “It’s about glamour with a provocative edge,” McGrath told Allure of the punk look at Versace. These looks are extreme examples of a trend that can be toned down by shortening the wings, as models at Area and Jason Wu did, or going for a bolder smoky eye, à la PatBo.
