Hallux valgus occurs mainly between the ages of 40 and 60. To avoid it manifesting itself, everything must be focused on prevention
Damned "onions". In addition to ruining the aesthetics of the foot, they cause pains that really make one cry when rubbing with shoes produces an inflammation that can cause the part near the base of the big to swell. Unfortunately, many people really come to terms with this situation, technically called hallux valgus.
It especially hurts women, so much so that the ratio of the sexes is at least ten to one in favor of the pink quotas, also for the action over time of the shoes with a very high heel. At risk we are mainly between forty and sixty years, when the alterations of the mechanics of the foot begin to appear. Cases tend to be more frequent in the same family, because there is also a role of genetics in determining the situation.
Because the hallux valgus appears
Let me be clear: we are not born with the hallux valgus. But there may be a predisposition to a particular "relaxation" of the ligaments and muscles, which then lead to the appearance of a flat foot and then to the alterations of the big toe, or with an excessively arched foot. In this case the weight tends to discharge on the fingers and in particular on the first metatarsal (joint that controls the toes). Go as it goes, the end result is that year after year, the finger twists. Regardless of the mechanism, narrow shoes certainly do not help.
Technically, hallux valgus is a deformity acquired on a congenital predisposition with a deviation towards the outside of the first toe. Think for example of the railroad tracks that the train that runs above. As can happen in the event of an accident, even in this condition the big toe tends to "derail", as if it were a train that goes mad and strays from the tracks, until it is crooked and overlaps even above the two neighboring fingers.
This happens because above the first metatarsal the two ossicles that have the task of keeping the big toe head in place cannot do their job. Unfortunately this condition can be added to the inflammation caused by the shoes, especially if they are tight at the tip. This is how the painful "onions" are born, which must then be dealt with, case by case, according to specific conditions.
How to deal with the hallux valgus
Focusing on prevention, especially if there are cases in the family, is very important. In addition to choosing the right shoes, you can also benefit from the use of special orthopedic insoles or shoes that aim to avoid excessive load displaced on the front of the foot and therefore the overwork that tires the joint.
Physiotherapy treatments can also be useful, but when the pain becomes really difficult to bear and even discomforts in the ankles and knees that can be correlated with the presence of hallux valgus, the word can also pass to the surgeon. The eventual intervention must be chosen case by case, given that there are different techniques and considering that not all of them derive the maximum benefits from the operation, given that the bunion is a sort of "final element" of a chain of alterations that sometimes they cannot be completely resolved with the scalpel. The indications must therefore be identified case by case.
How to play in advance if you suffer from hallux valgus
Watch out for heels
The heel to excessively high (up to 12-14 centimeters) forces the foot to an uncomfortable position because it shortens the Achilles tendon. In doing so the weight of the body moves forward going to affect the base of the big toe.
Watch out for tips
The most suitable shoes for those suffering from hallux valgus are rather large round toes. The heel should not exceed 4-5 centimeters. The important thing is that the shoes are still very comfortable. Particular attention must be paid to sport: in addition to the recommended swimming exercise bikes and walking as long as the shoes do not squeeze the onion
Go ahead for orthotics
The plantar is useful for reducing the symptoms of central metatarsalgia, a consequence of the hallux valgus that leads to pain under the sole of the foot when walking. However, it does not need to correct the big toe defect. It must be soft, better done in differentiated absorption material to reduce the pressure where it really is needed.
If the toe tends to overlap on the other fingers, a simple plastic separator can be helpful, to be placed between the first and second finger, which keeps it detached. Elastic braces help to reduce the tension of the joint capsule favoring the correction of inflammation.
