Hiatal hernia is very common and can cause some ailments such as severe heartburn. This episode of "Daily Health Pills" explains what to do
How does the hiatal hernia manifest itself and why does it present itself? Hiatal hernia is a very common condition that often does not cause any disturbance and is discovered by chance.
How it arises and the two types of hernia
It is an anatomical alteration, characterized by the passage of a small portion of the stomach over the diaphragm, the large muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. When this situation occurs, the gastric juice normally flows back to the esophagus and can also, but not always, cause various disorders. First of all, a strong sense of burning because the mucous membrane of the esophagus is unable to withstand the acidic contents of the stomach.
Explaining the origin of the problem is not easy. There are cases in which the hernia develops due to a congenital problem or trauma, but these are the rarest cases. The important thing is to understand what type of hernia it is. There are in fact two types. There is a sliding hiatal hernia which can be found in 3/4 out of 10 people with a radiological examination and is much more common than the second type, called paraesophageal hernia.
As mentioned, a hiatal hernia often does not cause any problems. Only when the reflux of acid material from the stomach towards the esophagus is significant, can a strong burning sensation appear behind the breastbone which can sometimes turn into a real pain and simulate a heart attack.
But be careful, when the hernia is very large, the food, instead of going directly into the stomach, can also stop in the herniated part, resulting in a slowdown in digestion and the appearance of nausea.
What to do
In the presence of a hiatal hernia, it is always necessary to speak to the doctor for possible treatments. Particular attention should be paid to nutrition: eat little but maybe more often. It is better to avoid foods that are particularly problematic for the stomach lining, such as chocolate, citrus fruits, mint and tomatoes. Also pay attention to the way you dress. It is always recommended to avoid particularly tight belts at the waist which facilitate the rise of acids upwards.
