How nutrition helps protect us from infectious diseases

Is there possible prevention from Covid19?

The nutrients useful for strengthening the body's defenses against infections

How do vitamin D, vitamin C or zinc interact with the immune system and can these substances play a role in the prevention of infectious diseases? To shed light on this issue, debunk fakenews circulated in the period of maximum collective shock for the coronavirus pandemic and contribute to the dissemination of correct information on the topic, approaching SaluTO 2020, which will be held at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 25 and 26 September, the infectious disease specialist Giovanni Di Perri, professor of Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine of the University of Turin, talks with Arianna Di Stadio, coordinator of the research activity of the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Perugia. Moderated by Federico Mereta, scientific journalist.

The meeting aims to help clarify whether and how the Sars-Cov2 virus has changed in recent months, how treatments are changing and how much the conditions of the individual's immune system affect the possibility of contracting the disease.

Evidence shared by the international scientific community, and confirmed by numerous studies, shows for example that vitamin D protects against the risk of acute respiratory tract infections, while vitamin C is effective in the prevention of viral contagion. Hence the interest of the most recent research on the impact of nutraceuticals, nutrients contained in foods that have beneficial effects on health.

"The combination of a traditional pharmacological approach and the use of supplements with proven efficacy is essential to obtain the best possible result in the fight against viruses" explains Arianna Di Stadio. “It is important to find the correct combination of molecules, to maximize the effects of these substances, which it is correct to always take under control and with the advice of your doctor.

Except for subjective intolerances or particular health conditions, a combination of vitamin D, which is a natural immunostimulant, vitamin C, zinc, selenium and Sambucus Nigra (Eldelberry), also recognized by the Food and Drug Administration as a valid support in infections of high respiratory tract; aloe, vitamin E and quercetin can also be very useful for the general health of the individual. In fact, all these elements contribute to strengthening the immune system and can be very useful in preventing viral diseases that attack the upper respiratory tract: an appropriate mix of supplements can help modulate the immune system's response to the aggression of the virus ".
