How to encourage kids to do homework (without a tantrum)

How to help our child concentrate

Given that there is a vast literature on the subject that helps even the most fearful and uncertain parents or who have chosen alternative methods to the traditional one (Montessori or Steiner, to name two of the most common), in the practice of things even just finding the formula more correct to encourage children to do homework after hours spent at school can be a source of error.

Better to study the correct way to let a positive message pass, compatible with an age, that of primary school, in which the variety of interests and great dynamism push children not to dwell on a single topic or in a systematic way. These are the small achievements and emancipation from a phase in which boredom also has its relevance: boredom is play, creativity, inventiveness and as such must be supported and educated, not removed.

Have the goal in front of you: to make your child a child with a sense of duty that is born and nourished by the awareness that studying helps to understand and achieve the small daily achievements sooner and better, providing him with useful tools. Time, order, serenity: these elements will help him to feel more secure, even in the studio.

Showing interest, following their activities and controlling them feeds the child the feeling that the tasks to be performed are important, but that you will not replace them. Autonomy is fundamental: when the teachers give them the tasks, they must pay attention and organize themselves so that it is always possible to have and the framework of things to do. But do not expect, we repeat, that a child of school age has the rhythms and approach of a teenager. The study is a phase in which he alternates between play and curiosity.

To make progress at home even in small steps, be the first to be attentive: the example will prepare your children to follow you with greater participation. In addition to a moment of seriousness, in which the little ones will acquire information on roles and forms, this space is a moment of sharing for you. Remember this and, therefore, avoid resorting to the use of the computer to carry out the tasks at least until adolescence. Beyond your personal opinions and educational assessments, never let the children perceive your doubts even regarding the work of the teachers.

If you notice excessive distraction or difficulty maintaining concentration, ask the teachers for confirmation and get advice on what to do. The harmony between home and family can guide the most complex choices and identify problems in a still embryonic phase. A signal should never be underestimated. Better to be apprehensive than to drop a symptom out of a sense of protection or personal discomfort.
