Fungus nail (onychomycosis): what it is
The nail fungus or onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nails of the hands and feet and manifests itself completely changing the appearance of the nails that occur with whitish or yellowish spots on the tip of the nail. When the fungus goes deeper, the nails are thickened and tend to crumble on the sides.

Causes that cause onychomycosis
Onychomycosis is usually caused by fungi, but sometimes it can also be triggered by mold and bacteria. These are microorganisms that live in hot and humid environments like showers and swimming pools. The most frequent causes are: poor blood circulation, excessive sweating, prolonged use of non-breathable socks and shoes, working in a damp environment, walking barefoot in places such as swimming pools and gyms, and small lesions of skin and nails .

Visible symptoms
The most common visible symptoms of onychomycosis are: thickened, brittle, crumbly and jagged nails. Still the nails are deformed, opaque rather than shiny as healthy ones. Furthermore the nails change color becoming dark due to the fragments accumulated under them. Another symptom is the detachment of the nail from its natural site, that is the nail bed, which causes a lot of pain and the emission of bad smell.

Cure for onychomycosis
The treatment of onychomycosis appears to be rather difficult due to frequent infections. In the pharmacy there are numerous anti-fungal creams and ointments which are actually not very effective. For the treatment of this annoying infection antifungal drugs are much more indicated. Furthermore, the duration of therapy can be more or less long, depending on how serious the problem is.

To prevent the onset of onychomycosis it is good to follow the most common hygienic rules and follow some specific tips such as keeping the nails of the hands and feet short, dry and clean. The nails must be cut and filed giving them a square shape, also you have to dry your hands and feet well after taking a bath or shower. Another important tip is to use synthetic socks that make the foot breathe, they must be changed often, where there was the possibility to take off the shoes during the day. It is good to wear latex gloves to protect it from excessive contact with water. Do not walk barefoot in the pool or cut or tear the skin around the nail.
