In any self-respecting hair care routine, it is important to consider how and how often to wash your hair. Here are some practical tips to have a clean and shiny hair every day
To have healthy and shiny hair every day, you need to take care of it in the right way. To do this, you cannot ignore a deep cleansing of the scalp. The hair is in fact constantly exposed to atmospheric agents, sudden changes in temperature, beauty treatments, shampoos, hairdryers, sweat. Without proper cleansing, there is therefore the risk of having to manage dry and brittle hair, itching, irritation, dandruff.
To make the difference in a deep cleansing of the hair, there are aspects including:
- the type of shampoo used;
- how they are washed.
The hair in fact needs a “special” beauty routine which consists of a delicate cleansing aimed at not damaging or accentuating any alterations of the scalp. In addition, not all hair is the same, so to have it healthy and soft to the touch, it is important to choose a shampoo with a specific formulation.
As explained by the Italian Association of Dermatology and Cosmetology (AIDECO), a good shampoo must meet requirements such as:
- remove dirt;
- respect the hydrolipidic film of the hair;
- respect or restore the pH of the scalp;
- moisturize and protect the hair;
- do not cause irritation or sensitization;
- treat symptoms of scalp changes (when present).
How often should you wash your hair?
Once you have chosen the right shampoo for your needs, you move on to the next step, which is to carry out a deep cleansing. And it is at this point that the question arises: how often should you wash your hair? The frequency depends above all on the type of hair. For example, straight and thin hair gets dirty more easily because the sebum, naturally present on the scalp, tends to cover it more quickly.
A similar situation also occurs with oily hair, where excessive sebum production makes it dirty and decidedly unsightly. In these cases, frequent washing (even every day) may be necessary as long as you use a suitable shampoo. There is no need to worry: the excess sebum produced will compensate for frequent washing and the hair will not appear dry.
On the contrary, thick, wavy or curly hair tends to be drier as the sebum does not cover the strands quickly. In this case, it is better to avoid frequent washing (for example every day) because there is a real risk that they will dry out too much. Instead, a deep cleansing every 2-3 days is recommended.
Even for dyed hair, it is advisable to avoid habitual washing in order to preserve the color as much as possible. However, it may be a little more difficult in the case of dyed hair, but also oily. In this case, the advice is to use specific products for colored hair that reduce color loss with each wash.
It is not just the type of hair that suggests how often to wash them. Sports training, for example, causes a greater production of sweat which also dirties the hair. Likewise, dust, pollen, or styling products can accumulate on the scalp, causing dirt or even irritation.
Another aspect to keep in mind is the age factor. It is in fact more likely that with the passing of the years the sebaceous glands will produce less sebum and consequently, the hair gets less dirty.
How to wash hair with dandruff?
The presence of dandruff could be a sign of excessive cleansing. In fact, itching, dry hair, persistent flaking are symptoms of a very dry scalp. Washing the hair often, even when not strictly necessary, damages the hydrolipidic film that protects the hair and scalp.
The well-being of hair with dandruff depends on the type of shampoo used, as well as on the way it is washed and finally dried. Here's how to clean them properly to keep them clean and beautiful without damaging them.
Most of the dirt is concentrated on the scalp, so start here. After taking a little of the product, with a circular motion of the fingers, you can move on to gently massage the skin. The shampoo will descend, thanks to the force of gravity, along the strands. Better not to start from the lengths or the ends: the risk is not to wash the scalp well and to dry the ends too much, which instead need a separate treatment.

For a deep cleansing of the hair, it is preferable to use water at a temperature of about 38 °. Otherwise, too hot one could cause damage especially in the case of sensitive scalp or make the hair dry and frizzy.
In the next step, it is better to pat (and not rub) the still wet hair with the help of a towel. In this way, excess water is eliminated and there is no risk of damaging them.
And finally the drying phase. Open air is the most suitable, as well as the most natural, but it is not always possible. At this point the classic hairdryer takes the field to be used with some precautions such as:
- avoid setting it to the highest temperatures;
- keep the jet of air a little away from the hair.
Keeping your hair healthy and tidy therefore requires some little attention. In fact, to pamper them in the right way it is enough to know them thoroughly, use specific cleansing products, and carry out a deep cleaning that respects the type. And in case of scalp changes that are difficult to manage, it is possible to resort to a consultation with a specialist.
