Low blood pressure or hypotension is such when the maximum and minimum arterial pressure do not exceed 90/60 mmHg. The causes of lower than average blood pressure values ​​can be different, and low blood pressure does not always cause symptoms. In some people, in fact, the pressure is physiologically low, it depends on a personal predisposition and does not cause any problems. In other cases, however, it can happen that the pressure drops suddenly causing dizziness, weakness, blurred vision and fainting. A sharp drop in blood pressure occurs for example when you get up quickly from a lying or sitting position (orthostatic hypotension): often, in this situation you have dizziness and vision disturbances. Similar symptoms occur in hypoglycemia, which is when blood glucose levels drop below a certain level. Generally these are temporary manifestations, which are soon compensated by the body thanks to a fine regulation that affects the entire cardiovascular system. Sometimes, however, the symptoms of low blood pressure can last longer: it is not uncommon to suffer from hypotension during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy or in the summer, when high temperatures increase the dilation of blood vessels. Hypotension can also be a side effect of some drugs, such as diuretics and vasodilators, or it can be linked to excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. Care must be taken when low blood pressure occurs for a prolonged period or if the symptoms are severe: in these cases it is better to consult a doctor, since hypotension could be the consequence of diseases or even serious disorders.

What to eat

During hot summer days, blood pressure can drop due to dilation of blood vessels and dehydration. As a result, you can feel exhausted and drained, have difficulty concentrating and suffer from dizziness. Some foods can help counter these symptoms by offering the body foods rich in vitamins and minerals or containing good amounts of sugars and other tonic and energizing substances. The diet for low blood pressure should therefore include abundant portions of fresh fruit and vegetables, choosing above all from vegetables rich in potassium and magnesium such as bananas and green leafy vegetables. During the day you can then consume snacks and energizing drinks such as dried fruit (apricots, dates, mangoes, raisins), nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews), dark chocolate, coffee, maté or mate and guarana. Pure licorice also works to increase pressure: it is found in herbal medicine in the form of candies to take with you and consume as needed. Finally, to keep blood pressure at adequate levels, we must not forget to hydrate the body by drinking sufficient quantities of water. Those who are unable to cover their water needs through water can resort to waters flavored with fruit and herbs or infusions of green tea, karkadè, tea rooibos, pomegranate or blueberry juice. These are drinks with a pleasant taste and a refreshing effect that bring benefits to the whole body, as well as moisturize.

Natural remedies

To counteract low blood pressure and the resulting symptoms, it is also possible to use natural remedies. Among these, the most used is certainly the licorice root to be taken in the form of herbal tea, fluid extract or, as we have seen, consuming candies made with pure licorice juice. In addition to licorice, plants with adaptogenic action such as eleutherococcus, rhodiola and ginseng are very useful, normally used to combat excessive fatigue and low energy, as they help the body to respond effectively to stress. A tonic action and an increase in blood pressure are also obtained thanks to rosemary and fenugreek. An effective mixture against hypotension and asthenia provides for example the use of 40 milliliters of ginseng mother tincture, 20 of rosemary mother tincture and 20 of fenugreek mother tincture; the mixture is taken twice a day at a dosage of 40 drops at a time. To increase the pressure you can then resort to the mother tincture of milk thistle, to be taken alone (30 drops twice a day) or in association with rosemary tincture. A further natural aid against fatigue caused by pressure drops is represented by the products of bees and in particular by pollen and royal jelly. Together with honey – which can be consumed in teaspoons or used to sweeten infusions and natural drinks – royal jelly and pollen represent real restorative remedies capable of providing the body with a whole series of sugars, vitamins and minerals that allow you to have enough energy. In any case, if hypotension occurs frequently, if you have low blood pressure for prolonged periods or if the symptoms are particularly severe, a consultation with your doctor is always recommended.
