What's this

Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP is a communication approach that uses a specific language to speak to the unconscious mind, thus favoring the achievement of one's goals. The unconscious mind is that part of our brain that functions without our control, regulating emotions and responding to internal and external stimuli to create habits, patterns and automatisms. The unconscious mind therefore plays a fundamental role in our unconscious reactions, allowing a great saving of energy in many situations. In fact, if we were to think consciously every time we breathe, we take a step, we drive and in all the circumstances in which we perform a gesture in a natural way, we would waste a lot of energy in reasoning. Sometimes, however, the automatisms of thought lead us to repeat mental patterns that are harmful to us by implementing responses that, although they come naturally to us, do not bring a benefit. For example, if we had learned, by mistake, to cross the road with the red light instead of waiting for the green one, we would often find ourselves in danger. The same thing can happen when we learn the wrong thought pattern.

NLP is used to communicate with the unconscious mind with certain words capable of reprogramming it, so as to establish new and more effective responses to certain stimuli. It is a tool created by psychologist Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder in the 1970s and today used by coaching, counselors and which can also be used in psychotherapy. Although NLP is in fact used as a persuasion technique, its main purpose is to offer useful tools for one's personal growth path.

NLP is mainly based on communication, as through words we define ourselves, reality and our condition by influencing actions and behavior. This applies to both internal and external communication, therefore the words we choose to communicate with ourselves and with others. In addition to verbal communication, NLP also analyzes non-verbal communication, such as posture and way of moving. Communication and the way in which one arises, according to NLP, define thoughts, beliefs and vision of reality, placing filters that can be negative or positive. Consequently, actions, behaviors, habits are the result of the words used to address oneself and others.

To understand which beliefs underlie the personal interpretation of reality and events and which limiting beliefs and behavioral patterns prevent one from achieving one's goals, NLP uses a series of specific questions organized in a metamodel and logical levels, as well as visualizations said "Submodality". Once you have investigated your motivations and what prevents you from achieving success, satisfaction and happiness in one or more areas of life, you clearly define your goals, time and resources to achieve them. By working on all these aspects and reprogramming the language with which one speaks to oneself and to others, it would be possible to change the perception that one has of oneself and of reality, process information in a different way, change point of view and attitude and therefore be able to achieve your goals more easily.

What is it for

NLP aims to develop actions and habits that can lead to success and the achievement of one's goals, through effective communication addressed to the unconscious mind. As we have seen, according to the promoters of this approach, thanks to language it is possible to eliminate limiting thoughts and beliefs and negative behaviors in favor of positive thoughts and actions. Thanks to this tool, it would be possible to overcome traumas, fears and phobias, fight addictions and bad habits, improve self-control and learning. By applying NLP it would then be possible to learn to express oneself more clearly and effectively, as well as having more satisfying relationships, more success at work and, in general, a happier life.

NLP is used for example to achieve success in work or satisfactory results in the study, to overcome the anxiety of speaking in public or related to difficult and stressful tests, but also to be able to lose weight, quit smoking or to be able to be constant in good habits, such as exercising regularly. Furthermore, NLP techniques are used to improve communication with others and, consequently, the relationship with friends, family, colleagues and collaborators. NLP promises results in a short time, which can be achieved easily and for free by anyone. To date, however, the effectiveness of NLP has not yet been demonstrated.
