Nopal is the super food that regulates cholesterol and diabetes, also helping us lose weight.

This plant is part of the cactus family, it grows wild in America but can also be found in our country. Poor in calories and rich in soluble fiber, prickly pear – as it has been nicknamed – has many properties. In its juicy pulp there are many beneficial substances, from calcium to phosphorus, passing through potassium and sodium. The nopal is also rich in vitamins of groups A, B, C and K, as well as chlorophyll, proteins and riboflavin.

Over the years the nopal has often been at the center of scientific studies that have highlighted its properties. This fruit is useful for regulating cholesterol in the body, thanks to the presence of fibers, vitamin B3 and amino acids. If consumed in the right doses it allows to regularize the conversion of the sugars taken with the feeding in fats, keeping under control the triglycerides and converting the LDL cholesterol (the bad one) to HDL (the good one). Finally it favors the elimination of bile acids, among the main causes of cholesterol.

The prickly pear is a great food also for those who have to keep the blood sugar level under control. It is in fact recommended to people with diabetes, due to the high content of amino acids, able to give energy and to lower glucose levels. It increases sensitivity to insulin, strengthening pancreas and liver, but above all stimulating the movement of glucose in all the cells of our body.

It's not over here, because numerous researches have revealed that the nopal is useful for getting back in shape. It improves digestion and intestinal transit, deflating the belly. Thanks to the high fiber content it allows to reach the sense of satiety more quickly, improving the work of the colon.

How to consume it? Nopal is a particularly versatile food that can be cooked in many different ways. Its blades, once deprived of thorns, are tender and tasty, perfect to be marinated, fried or baked. They are an excellent side dish or perfect to enrich first and second courses, smoothies and salads. You can use nopal to prepare sauces and soups, but also juices and jams.
