Prostate at risk in summer. Lifestyles and proper nutrition even on vacation

Tell me what color you pee and I'll tell you if you drink enough. The advice of the experts of the Italian Society of Urology

Summer is a very delicate period for prostate health, especially for the approximately 4.5 million Italians who already suffer from benign prostatic hypertrophy: for them these hot months become even more delicate, because they may have to correct the therapy to avoid pressure drops, and because sudden changes in temperature from hot to cold can expose them to acute retention of very dangerous urine. Simple lifestyle changes can help keep the problem under control even on vacation.

Password: moderation. "For this reason, I always advise you to base your behavior on gradualness and intelligence", explains Walter Artibani, Secretary General of the Italian Society of Urology who recently also produced 8 "video talks" on the main urological problems, available on www.siu .com. "For example, avoid traveling 60 km by bicycle if you are not used to it or wear yourself out in endless tennis games under the sun and do not exaggerate even with sex: nobody says that you should abstain, but who is used to having a relationship with week or month, he can't think he can support one a day without the prostate being affected. "

50% of men who have an enlarged prostate have problems with incomplete emptying of the bladder, with a falling and prolonged jet and an increase in the frequency of urination night and day. In the summer, a part of those who suffer from enlarged prostate must pay particular attention to temperature changes: "They are those who have an obstructive form of prostatic hypertrophy. It is very important for them to avoid a situation that occurs frequently in the summer months: after having lunch abundantly and drinking alcohol outdoors, move abruptly to an environment where the temperature is very low for air conditioning. In this case, the already present partial obstruction to the emptying of the bladder can become more serious and turn into an acute urine retention with the need to insert a catheter ".

No to alcohol, yes to the right amount of water

Also at the table it is important to pay attention: "If you do not drink enough, the body cannot compensate for the loss of fluids and thus increases the concentration of urine. With the predictable result of having urinary stasis, an ideal habitat for bacterial infections, "explains Artibani. The secret, therefore, is to drink lots of water while avoiding alcoholic substances. But what is the ideal water dose? “The prevailing message is the reference quantity is two liters per day. But in reality a lot depends on the type of physical activity that takes place and what temperatures: intense sweating is easy in the summer, with a consequent marked loss of fluids. In reality, there is a very simple way to adjust: look at the color of your urine ", notes Artibani. “If in fact they are yellow or of an intense orange, it is a sign that they are too concentrated and therefore you need to drink more. If straw yellow or white, however, no problem: it means that we are taking the right dose of liquids ".

But summer is also a period of intense conviviality, thanks to the holidays. And often this translates into some extravagance, especially at the table. Also in this case it is appropriate to moderate the diet. SIU experts advise limiting the consumption of animal fats, alcohol and spirits, preferring instead, foods containing antioxidants such as vitamin A (carrots, apricots, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes), vitamin C (currants, kiwis, citrus fruits, strawberries , blueberries, cauliflowers, peppers), vitamin E (olive oil, vegetable oils, wheat germ), selenium (meat, nuts, egg yolk), zinc (red meats, walnuts, liver).

Some foods, however, including chocolate, as well as coffee, pepper, dairy products, spicy molecules, sausages, alcohol and fried foods, if consumed in excessive quantities, can have a potentially irritating effect, therefore inflammatory, especially on the prostate. So be careful.
