Protect your eyes: how to choose sunglasses and the 9 rules of the expert

Hot and sun can cause or accelerate eye diseases. Dr. Corradi from MioDottore explains how to protect eyesight at all ages

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, the heat and the typical climatic conditions of the summer (sea, salt, see-through and sun) can cause serious damage to the eyes.

They can provoke or accelerate diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration (maculopathy) and pterygium (abnormal growth of the membrane that covers the eye). Furthermore, without adequate protection, episodes of dry eye and painful conjunctiva and corneal inflammation (actinic keratoconjunctivitis) may occur, due to solar radiation.

Dr. Raffaella Corradi, an Abruzzese ophthalmologist, from MioDottore – a leading platform in Italy and in the world specialized in online booking of medical examinations and part of the DocPlanner group – explains how to protect eyesight in the best way and prevent damage and discomfort.

To limit the effect of atmospheric agents and prevent eye redness and infections it is advisable to avoid the use of contact lenses. "The salinity of sea water alters osmosis and tends to cause contact lenses to dry, thus losing their essential characteristics. Furthermore, it can be more easily exposed to infections, conveyed by the lens itself, if it is not adequately treated after the bath. Even the wind and the high temperatures, which alter the structure of the tear film, can interfere with contact lenses, reducing their tolerability. Artificial tears, if used frequently, can help keep the eye hydrated, ”explains Dr. Corradi.

Sunglasses to prevent damage
The use of sunglasses is fundamental, always choosing the most suitable lenses based on various factors: skin type, age, refractive defect, lighting conditions and the environment in which they are used.

The MioDottore expert recommends buying sunglasses that can protect against hazards, capable of blocking at least 99% of UVB rays and 95% of UVA rays, and which contain detailed information on filtering power on the label. Polarized sun lenses are preferable which, in addition to protecting the eyes 100% from UV rays, enable greater clarity even in the distance, they give back to the colors a greater saturation and naturalness and allow to better perceive the contrasts.

Glasses should be chosen based on age
The eyes of children, up to 12 years, are particularly sensitive to light; for this it is necessary to buy models that can be used both at sea and in the mountains, with unbreakable lenses and optically pure, without imperfections. To protect eyesight, especially in very young children or those who may be intolerant to sun lenses, it is preferable to also use hats with a large visor that can help the use of glasses, partially reducing and shielding the sun's rays.

Mirrored lenses, on the other hand, are ideal for young people, especially in the mountains, where the light glare can be very strong. Even the over 60s must follow some precautions, explains the expert: "In this age group the eye undergoes mutations, due to aging. For this reason, both in subjects without visual defects and in those operated by cataract, photochromic lenses that gradually regulate the flow of light can represent the optimal solution “.

The nine golden rules for everyone:

  • Sun protection from early childhood with certified sun lenses and choices based on the use to be made of them and functional in all weather conditions (sun, wind, cloudy days). These must be used not only at sea, but in all situations of high brightness. Sunglasses, with filters according to the law, must be worn by everyone to limit the harmful action of ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB);
  • Minimize sun exposure, avoiding the hottest hours;
  • For those who use contact lenses, pay particular attention to the methods and situations of use;
  • Use single-dose tear substitutes without preservatives to avoid unpleasant complications related to tear hyperevaporation (ocular dryness) and / or lubricants based on hyaluronic acid and soothing, better if single-dose without preservatives, which allow to rebalance the tear film, or eye drops with filtration of riboflavin-based light radiation;
  • Drink plenty of water and follow a proper diet (rich in vitamins and minerals) to avoid dehydration of the vitreous body and moisturize the eye from the inside;
  • Remember to use adequate sun protection even on the eyelids and around the eyes. These are delicate areas that must be defended, as well as with sunglasses, even with a hypoallergenic sunscreen and without perfume;
  • Use suitable, sporty and protective sunglasses when jogging, water sports, cycling, rock climbing or hiking;
  • Wear a hat with visor even if you use sunglasses, especially in children;
  • Identify possible pharmacological treatments in progress or pathologies of the ocular surface or incorrect use of contact lenses that can amplify sensitivity to sunlight and remove these causes if possible.
