Nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, burning eyes, irritated mucous membranes and circulatory problems – these and similar complaints can occur after consuming the “Hot Chip Challenge” product. The manufacturer is now recalling the chips due to the existing health risk.
Bazaar Import & Export has launched a recall for the “Hot Chip Challenge” snack item. Laboratory tests showed that the capsaicin content in the chips fluctuates greatly and can reach levels that are dangerous to health. Products with the following best-before dates are affected:
What is the Hot Chip Challenge?
Fueled by social media, teenagers and young adults have recently taken on a popular challenge: the “Hot Chip Challenge”. In this test of courage, an extremely hot tortilla chip is consumed that is seasoned with the “Carolina Reaper” – the hottest chili pepper in the world. Reactions to consumption are often shared on social networks such as TikTok.
Strongly fluctuating capsaicin concentrations
The Hessian state laboratory examined the extremely hot chips and found that the products contain different amounts of capsaicin. Capsaicin is responsible for the sharp and burning sensation when eating spicy foods as this active ingredient interacts with the pain receptors in the mouth and body.
In some chips, the capsaicin content was so high that health problems, including a medical emergency, cannot be ruled out
- High blood pressure,
- Burning eyes,
- irritated mucous membranes,
- Circulation problems.
Eating the chips is strongly discouraged
“That’s why our urgent recommendation is: stay away from this test of courage!” warns the Consumer Window Hessen. Parents should inform children and young people about the potential danger posed by consuming the chips. The path from a viral “TikTok” video to a medical emergency can be shockingly short.
Chips can be handed in at the shopping center
According to the manufacturer, consumers who have already purchased the “Hot Chip Challenge” can hand it in at the respective shopping location by presenting their receipt and receive their money back. (vb)
