Sedentariness causes the death of 88,000 people a year in Italy

Experts warn against a sedentary lifestyle that, according to some studies, causes over 88,000 deaths a year

A sedentary lifestyle is a killer and each year causes the death of as many as 88,000 people only in Italy.

A research reveals that the lack of physical activity would be responsible for 14.6% of all deaths in our country and would be linked to some serious diseases, such as colorectal cancer and breast cancer, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The data regarding the damages caused by a sedentary lifestyle have been collected in the Istisan Movement, Sport and Health Report: the importance of policies to promote physical activity and the impact on the community created by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), by the Ministry of Health Health and by the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).

According to experts, only one Italian out of three dedicates himself to a sport in his spare time, while one child in four devotes only one hour a week to a moving game. Physical activity, the experts point out, is essential to prevent many diseases and to improve one's style and life expectancy.

"The promotion of physical activity is certainly important at the individual level – explained Walter Ricciardi, President of the ISS -, but also and above all in a corporate vision with the involvement of different sectors (education, transport, environment, fiscal policies, media, industry, local authorities), so that physical activity can become directly integrated into everyone's everyday life and so that the individual can promote his own health by adopting an active lifestyle ”.

There are many good reasons to play sports at least half an hour a day. Physical activity improves mood, releasing endorphins in the body, which help us feel more relaxed and relaxed. Reduces the risk of Alzheimer's and cardiovascular diseases: sport in fact counteracts cognitive decline and helps us stay young, in addition counteracts the increase in cholesterol and pressure, protecting blood vessels. Finally, moving is a great remedy to prevent numerous problems, such as heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, cancer, arthritis, depression and metabolic syndromes.
