This episode of “Daily Health Pills” explains why iodine is important for the proper functioning of the thyroid and what happens if it is deficient.
What is the relationship between iodine deficiency and goiter? The production of hormones and to some extent the regulation of the thyroid are closely linked to the activity of the pituitary gland. Thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH governs the glandular action of the thyroid. On the boost of this hormone, the thyroid in turn produces its own hormones which incorporate some iodine molecules.

Goiter and thyroid
For this reason, an insufficient intake of iodine over time can lead to a deficit in the production of thyroid hormones and therefore to compensatory manifestations by the gland tissue. It therefore tends to become larger to respond to the demands of the organism.
When there is a chronic lack of iodine, the thyroid gland reacts and tries to develop its own structures. Then it increases in volume to the point of creating a real swelling in the neck that can sometimes be completely unknown because the goiter develops inside compressing the trachea and esophagus.
Sometimes the abnormal development of the gland can be related to a single lump that forms inside it, but in other cases it can be related to several small nodules.
Always discuss this with your doctor. For the rest, it should be remembered that iodine is important. Just as we must keep in mind that we must consume little salt, but iodized, because it can create problems on the front of hypertension. In fact, iodine makes the thyroid work at its best, allowing it to produce hormones that help the entire body to work normally. In the case of hypothyroidism, for example, there can be various ailments such as drowsiness or a heart that beats more slowly, up to an increase in cholesterol.
