Thyroid in pregnancy: what changes?

The thyroid in pregnancy and the risks that can arise are spontaneous abortions and premature births, here are some tips for future mothers

Thyroid in pregnancy: the risks related to this problem can manifest themselves in different forms and are caused by a malfunction of the thyroid glands. Hypothyroidism can be responsible for an intellectual deficit of the newborn baby. In this regard, it is essential to follow all due precautions. First of all, it is very important to provide the body with the right iodine requirement it needs, since this affects the correct functioning of the thyroid. It is precisely the period of pregnancy that requires greater attention if you are subject to such inconveniences.

It is a very delicate period in which the body begins to manifest different needs. It is therefore essential to keep the thyroid healthy in connection with the development of the fetus, in order to avoid any worsening. During the period of pregnancy, the thyroid gland is exposed to greater pressure from the body, since it must perform a double function for both the mother and the baby in the womb. It is advisable to monitor the thyroid function and the TSH hormone both before and during the gestation period. 7.8% of women who suffer from hypothyroidism during their fertile age experience less thyroid activity resulting in an increase in the TSH hormone.

Despite this, in most cases no specific symptoms occur, provided that detailed analyzes are not performed. Hyperthyroidism, or an alteration of the activity of the thyroid gland is not to be underestimated especially during pregnancy, since it can increase the risk of spontaneous abortion, perinatal mortality, as well as premature birth. A deficit related to the intellectual quotient of the child cannot be excluded. A high rate of iodine is therefore indispensable to alleviate this symptomatology.

The daily iodine requirement of an adult foresees a quantity of 150 micrograms, while during pregnancy and breastfeeding it increases to 250. For this reason experts advise to implement a real prevention, that is to perform iodine prophylaxis before gestation. The thyroid in pregnancy and the risks it may entail therefore do not neglect any symptoms and regularly perform all the necessary diagnoses, in order to better manage the sweet wait and protect the health of the unborn child in the best possible way.
