Due to the detection of potential pathogens, a recall campaign for sprouted vegetables has currently been launched at EDEKA. Consumption is strongly discouraged.
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) is informing about a recall for “EDEKA organic pea sprouts”. Listeria has been detected in the product, which can pose a significant risk, particularly to people with weakened immune systems.
Health risk when consumed
Due to possible contamination with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, health problems cannot be ruled out if organic pea sprouts are consumed, warns the BVL.
Affected by the recall are the “EDEKA organic pea sprouts” in the 100 g bowl with the use-by date of December 22nd, 2023 and December 23rd, 2023, whereby the use-by date can be found on the front of the packaging. The sprouts were offered nationwide primarily at EDEKA and Marktkauf.
In view of the health risks that listeria can pose, we strongly advise against consuming the sprouts. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), ingesting Listeria can, among other things, result in severe, febrile gastroenteritis within a few hours and up to two days later.
Who is particularly at risk?
Flu-like symptoms with fever and diarrhea are the most noticeable symptoms and there is an increased risk of severe disease, particularly in people with weakened immune systems such as newborns, the elderly, pregnant women or people with chronic illnesses.
In the worst case, listeriosis can lead to fatal sepsis and, in principle, any organ can be affected during the course of the disease, with various localized, purulent infections such as arthritis, endocarditis or conjunctivitis occurring, warns the RKI.
Return to shopping locations
According to the BVL, the sprouted vegetables have already been withdrawn from sale and other products are not affected. Anyone who has already bought the pea sprouts can return the item to the shopping location without presenting the receipt for a refund of the purchase price.
