For lowering blood pressure, brisk walking and yoga are similarly effective in men. This makes it clear that even moderate-intensity exercise can significantly reduce blood pressure.
In a new study, experts from Bharathiar University (India) examined the effects of brisk walking and yoga on the mobility and blood pressure of middle-aged men. The results can be read in the “EPRA International Journal of Research and Development” (IJRD).
Twelve week exercise program
A total of 45 men between the ages of 40 and 45 took part in the study. They were divided into three groups of 15 people each. The first group was instructed to walk at a brisk pace, the second group practiced yoga, and the third group served as a control group without specific training.
The participants completed their assigned training programs over a period of twelve weeks, with training sessions taking place five days a week, the team explains.
How was mobility measured?
In order to assess how the different training affected mobility, the researchers carried out the so-called Sit & Reach test with the participants, a method used worldwide to measure mobility.
In addition, the participants’ blood pressure was measured before and after training using conventional blood pressure monitors.
The researchers then determined the significant differences between the training participants and the control group with regard to the selected variables.
Effects on mobility & blood pressure?
When comparing the training effects, the team found that both brisk walking and yoga had a positive effect on the flexibility and blood pressure of the male participants compared to the control group.
According to the research team, there were no significant differences between the positive effects of yoga and brisk walking.
Prevent illnesses
Expert Laura Gray from the Cleveland Clinic (USA) also emphasizes how beneficial brisk walking can be. Physical exercise, combined with a healthy diet, can lower blood pressure and thus prevent serious illnesses such as strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and kidney disease.
Gray also explicitly points out that brisk walking is an excellent way to lower blood pressure. You just have to make sure to walk faster than normal so that your heart and breathing rates increase. (as)
