Dancing not only increases fat loss in overweight and obese people, but it is also associated with a significant improvement in those affected’s body composition.
A new meta-analysis involving experts from Hunan University of Science and Technology examined the effects of dancing on the body composition of people with overweight and obesity. The results can be read in the specialist magazine “PLoS ONE”.
Meta-analysis of existing studies
For the study, a total of seven different databases were evaluated to identify studies that compared the effects of dance interventions with those of a normal lifestyle, the team reports.
Only studies that examined dance interventions in overweight and obese people with abnormal fat levels were included in the meta-analysis, and there were no restrictions on the type of dance, the researchers added in a press release.
In total, the experts identified 654 studies, ten of which were classified as suitable for the current research.
Dancing improves BMI and reduces body fat
The results of the meta-analysis show that dancing is associated with significant improvements in body mass, BMI, waist circumference, body fat and fat mass compared to a normal lifestyle, the team reports. However, no changes in the waist-to-hip ratio were detectable.
