To reduce your risk of diabetes, focus on a balanced diet and favor certain foods. According to a new study, avocado helps prevent this disease… but only in women. Explanations.
Avocado reduces the risk of diabetes but only in women
By analyzing the diets of more than 28,000 Mexican adults, researchers found that adults who regularly ate avocado had a lower risk of diabetes than those who did not. And this benefit was observed from the introduction of small quantities into the diet: 30 to 38 grams per day. Surprisingly, these benefits were only seen in women.
How to explain such a difference ? The researchers believe that it could be linked to the lifestyle of the two populations. More men in the study tended to be smokers (around 38%) compared to women (only 12%) and smoking may increase the risk of developing diabetes. Alcohol consumption could also be another factor to consider, knowing that it can promote metabolic syndrome and therefore diabetes.
The advantages of the lawyer
Known for its benefits on cardiovascular health, avocado also helps reduce the risk of diabetes. The mechanism involved remains partly mysterious. However, we know that these fruits are rich in fiber which helps with blood sugar management and satiety.
Additionally, avocados are rich in polyunsaturated fats, which slow digestion and also help regulate satiety and blood sugar levels. Finally, although it is a fruit, the avocado does not contain sugar and therefore also contributes to glycemic balance.

How to include avocado in your daily diet?
If after reading this article, you want to eat more avocado every day, discover the advice of Wendy Bazilian, dietician interviewed by the Healthline site:
- Swap out the mayonnaise or butter you might put on sandwiches for mashed avocado for a creamy, nutrient-rich spread;
- Replace your store-bought salad dressings with a homemade avocado dressing. To do this, simply mix the avocado with the juice of a lemon, olive oil and aromatic herbs;
- Use sliced avocado as a garnish in tacos, burritos or salads;
- Finally, avocado can be added to a smoothie, to stock up on vitamins, by combining it with other fruits.
