5 good reasons to keep your eggs in their box

When you return from the supermarket or grocery store, do you usually store your eggs in the tray provided for this purpose in the fridge? Serious error. They should always be kept in their original container. Explanations.

Eggs: beware of the risk of food poisoning!

Like all raw foods, eggs should be handled and stored with care to minimize the risk of food poisoning.

Indeed, even if the eggs are usually clean after laying, they can sometimes be contaminated by bacteria such as Salmonella or others (inside the egg or on the shell) which can lead to food poisoning.

In fact, always choose eggs that are not cracked because they have a shorter shelf life and present a risk of contamination. Also check for droppings on the shell.

Finally, choose organic eggs or eggs from free-range chickens (code 1 refers to the shell). This figure indicates that the eggs meet certain animal welfare standards.

Eggs: here's why you should leave them in their box

According to Océane Sorel, doctor of virology, eggs must remain in their box for several good reasons:

  • They tend to absorb odors from the fridge, so keeping them in their box protects them from odors (Roquefort cheese is just one example);
  • Over time, eggs gradually lose water through the pores in their shells, causing their quality to decrease. This process is accelerated when they are kept outside their egg carton;
  • The date written on the box is actually a “Recommended Consumption Date”, indicating that it is best to consume the eggs before this date (but the latter may have passed). It is generally set for the 28th day after laying. It is always best to keep the box to have access to this date.
  • The egg cartons are also designed to absorb shock and protect the eggs from cracking.
  • Finally, by storing them in their original container, you will avoid direct contact with other foods, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination (when bacteria is transferred from a contaminated food to a healthy food).

Our other tips for storing eggs

Other good habits should be adopted when placing eggs in the refrigerator:

  • Eggs should be stored on the middle shelf of the refrigerator and not on the side. This practice ensures their conservation at a constant temperature.
  • Leftover raw egg whites and yolks should be stored in airtight containers, placed quickly in the refrigerator.

About author

I pass by being that person liable to duty, but who cannot resist the flights of imagination. I have always loved the legends, the myths and the stories of the old and distant times with my whole being. In high school I fell in love with the history of art and I made it the object of my university studies. Once I graduated, I dusted off an old flame: that of children's literature. I rediscovered the beauty and importance of illustrated books and books, where, to a quality text, images are added that give strength and enrich what is narrated with meaning. It can be said that illustrators often make real works of art! It was then that I decided to follow this passion of mine both as a volunteer, entering the ranks of readers born to read, and in my work as a librarian. I am a greedy devoured of illustrated books (I have an absolute weakness for the stories that have bears or wolves as protagonists!), I love simple stories that know how to strike and surprise. I hate pigeon-holed books in a specific age group and readers in a certain category of readings. I think everyone is different and deserves to choose (and be chosen by the books) without constraints, in complete freedom! [email protected]
