Due to potential contamination with harmful pesticides, a recall campaign for potatoes has been launched at Edeka, Netto and Marktkauf. Consumption is advised against.
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has informed about the recall of potatoes sold at Edeka, Marktkauf and Netto. Residues of a pesticide were found in the potatoes, which could pose a health risk.
Health risks cannot be ruled out
Since the potatoes were found to contain contamination with a pesticide “above the legal maximum residue level” and a health risk cannot be completely ruled out, the recall is being carried out in the interests of preventive consumer protection.
The potatoes affected are early potatoes of the Lilly variety from the country of origin Egypt, which were distributed by Daltex Europe GmbH and offered under various product names at Edeka, Marktkauf and Netto.
These potatoes are affected
Specifically, these are the following products:
- “EDEKA Ackergold early potatoes, floury cooking”, origin Egypt, variety Lilly in 2 kg bag
- “GUT&GÜNSTIG early potatoes, mainly waxy”, origin Egypt, variety Lilly in 2.5 kg bag
- “Market day early potatoes, floury”, origin Egypt, variety Lilly in 2.5 kg bag
The “EDEKA Ackergold early potatoes, floury” were mainly offered at EDEKA and Marktkauf in Bremen, Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony and the adjacent parts of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in Rhineland-Palatinate, the southern part of Hesse, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg and the adjacent parts of Bavaria, reports the BVL.
The article “GUT&GÜNSTIG early potatoes, mainly waxy” was available primarily at EDEKA and Marktkauf in Rhineland-Palatinate, the southern part of Hesse, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg and the adjacent parts of Bavaria.
According to the recall, the “Market Day Early Potatoes, Floury” were sold at Netto Marken-Discount almost nationwide, with the exception of Hamburg, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein.
According to the supplier, the trading companies reacted immediately and removed the goods in question from sale. Other potato varieties and countries of origin were not affected.
Anyone who has already bought the potatoes can return them to the store for a refund of the purchase price, even without presenting the receipt.
Risk unclear
Unfortunately, the recall does not mention which pesticide is involved, so it is difficult to estimate what specific health risks the potatoes could pose. (fp)
