Stress pimples are not just a saying, but actually various stress-related mechanisms can lead to the development of acne. Measures to reduce stress can sometimes also help against pimples.
A research team from Great Britain, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has examined the connection between stress and acne in a recent review. The study results have been published as a preprint version on the “Research Square” platform.
Stress as an acne trigger?
Millions of people worldwide are affected by acne vulgaris and previous studies had already suggested a connection with the stress levels of those affected, the team reports.
Based on a comprehensive evaluation of the available research, the experts therefore examined potential links between stress and acne and attempted to identify responsible mechanisms.
Several key mechanisms
“Our study revealed several key mechanisms by which stress influences the development and exacerbation of acne,” the research team said.
For example, stress can cause hormonal changes, including an increase in cortisol and androgens, which stimulate sebaceous gland activity and lead to excessive sebum production with the formation of pimples.
Inflammation triggered by stress-related cytokine release can also worsen acne lesions, the researchers report.
Stress also impairs the skin's barrier function and changes immune reactions, which can also lead to acne.
Furthermore, stress affects lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep and skin care habits, all of which can contribute to the severity of acne, the research team explains.
In addition, experts name the following other influencing factors of stress-related acne pathogenesis:
- Neuropeptide,
- oxidativer Stress,
- insulin resistance,
- altered pH value of the skin,
- Vascular changes,
- and changes in the skin microbiome.
Diverse interactions
These findings underscore the diverse nature of the interactions between stress and acne and the importance of considering both physiological and psychological factors in acne treatment strategies, the researchers conclude.
Stress relief for acne treatment
In order to develop effective treatment strategies, it is crucial to better understand the role of stress in acne. Holistic strategies for acne therapy that combine stress reduction techniques with conventional treatments are recommended here. (fp)
