Aloe vera has a variety of cosmetic and medicinal properties that have beneficial effects on many aspects of human health, including improved wound healing, stimulation of the immune system, and lowering blood sugar levels in diabetes.
In a new review study involving experts from the University of Calabria (Italy), previous research into the effects of aloe vera and the ingredients responsible for them was evaluated. The results have been published in the journal “Foods”.
Healthy ingredients of aloe vera
Aloe vera has numerous biological properties and, according to researchers, contains about 75 biologically active compounds such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, phenolic compounds, sterols and amino acids.
The evaluated studies provided numerous indications of a health-promoting effect and aloe vera can, for example, improve wound healing, fight allergies, stimulate the immune system and lower blood sugar levels in diabetes, the team reports.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
In addition, aloe vera has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, laxative and antiviral properties, the experts add.
But not only aloe vera itself, but also the juice made from it has beneficial effects on health. Various gastrointestinal complaints such as indigestion, heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome can be treated with the help of aloe vera juice, the team reports.
Nutritionist Beth Czerwony from the Cleveland Clinic (USA) also confirms these positive effects of aloe vera juice. In a specialist article, she reports that aloe vera contains a variety of antioxidants that bind free oxygen radicals in the body and thus protect against inflammation.
Aloe vera juice also reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Another advantage is that the juice contains very little sugar and calories.
Relieves heartburn and constipation
All in all, it can be said that aloe vera has many healthy ingredients and offers a natural and at the same time highly effective way to combat various health problems.
Aloe vera is also widely used in the cosmetics industry, mainly because of its positive effects on the aesthetic appearance of skin, hair and nails. However, the researchers also point out that the studies evaluated also raised concerns about potential toxicity.
In view of the contradictory data on the toxicity of aloe vera, despite all the health benefits of the medicinal plant, attention should also be paid to possible side effects and interactions with medications.(as)
