How to control your health through gadgets

How to control your health through gadgets

Engineers have long been thinking about how to combine business with pleasure: easily and unobtrusively monitor a person’s health indicators, without forcing him to go to the doctor just for the sake of the measurement itself. The solution has always been on the surface – to combine smart sensors with what people use every day or regularly: with watches that are on their wrist every day, with smartphones, with various sports equipment. Previously, such solutions were cumbersome, but as electronics miniaturized, it became possible to integrate a computing chip even, for example, into a jump rope or dumbbell. Here's our pick of the most interesting (and useful) devices available today.

UpRight Go 2 Posture Corrector

The UpRight Go 2 gadget helps you monitor your body position in space and avoid slouching. The matchbox-sized device is attached to the back just above the shoulder blades and reminds you of itself with various types of vibration if your body posture needs to be adjusted. During training, the gadget displays all data in real time on the application screen, where you can set goals, analyze results and track progress. The device ergonomically hides under clothing, without revealing itself or you to others if you are seriously concerned about your posture.

Smart watch with 24-hour blood pressure monitoring function HUAWEI WATCH D2

One of the most advanced gadgets, the HUAWEI WATCH D2, has a very compact size (48x38x13.2 mm) and houses an entire tonometer. The main cause of cardiovascular diseases lies in increased blood pressure. But previously, to measure it, a separate device and a doctor were needed, whose presence could cause “white coat syndrome” – high blood pressure due to stress. For others, on the contrary, when measured in a clinic, the pressure may be normal, but when they measure it at home, it turns out to be high. This type of hypertension is called latent, and its owners are more likely to experience cardiovascular diseases. Changes in blood pressure are also influenced by other factors, for example, emotional state, environmental conditions, nutrition and others.

HUAWEI WATCH D2 allows you to take measurements several times a day – thanks to the ABPM (24-hour blood pressure monitoring) function. It can be adjusted and customized by choosing the time of getting ready for bed and getting up, as well as the frequency of measurement, which implies a comfortable, painless measurement of pressure without sleep disturbances. This significantly increases the accuracy of measurements, especially at night and in the morning, and allows you to track arterial hypertension in time and consult a doctor, since depending on the type of blood pressure rhythm, different treatment is required.

At the same time, engineers have maximally adapted the device to long-term wear – this is the first watch in the industry with a cuff in a strap with a comfortable fastening. The strap is made of soft and pleasant to the touch thermopolyurethane with a special texture. The case itself has become even thinner and, therefore, lighter compared to the previous generation: only 41 g. In addition, the watch has a modern, bright design – take at least the gold-colored case version, equipped with a white strap.

Such smartwatches are expected to revolutionize the field of blood pressure monitoring and comprehensively optimize the measurement experience. (Important: This is not a medical device, data should be used for reference only.)

FORM Swim Goggles

The device shows in real time how the swim is progressing: distance, distance length, frequency and number of throws, calories burned, etc., duplicating the information in the mobile application. You can share your workout results, track your progress over time, and customize which metrics you want to see on the display, including when each metric should be shown, such as when you turn or when you're resting. The lenses have an anti-fog coating, and the built-in battery lasts about 16 hours without recharging. If you wish, you can also purchase a pulse sensor, which is fixed directly on the glasses and allows you to see your pulse both during the swim on the glasses display and in the FORM Swim application. Additionally, on the manufacturer’s website you can sign up for a subscription, which provides more opportunities in the form of instructions for special training with glasses.

Smart yoga mat SmartMat Yoga

SmartMat is equipped with a variety of sensors that are sensitive to body pressure on the mat and balance. Information from the sensors is accumulated in an application on a smartphone, which allows you to track the dynamics of your workouts, as well as optimize your training program based on individual characteristics. A special feature: SmartMat can not only record results, but also give voice instructions on how to perform the exercises correctly. The mat has three modes:

  1. Voice, designed for home practice.
  2. Quiet, displays all information on the screen, suitable for indoor training.
  3. “Zen”, when the mat only records the results and analyzes the information in the application.

A full charge of the SmartMat allows it to function for up to six hours.

JaxJox training complex

Starting with crowdfunding of a “smart” weight, the startup JaxJox gradually grew into a full-fledged training project. According to the creators, it is a complete solution for home fitness, replacing the standard bulky exercise machine with an innovative, space-saving design. The emphasis is on combining free weight kettlebells and dumbbells, a “smart” roller with digital tracking of sets, repetitions and other training results obtained from built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers. The kettlebell here, of course, is also not simple – with one touch you can adjust its weight without the need to use clamps. You can admire yourself and the results on a large screen, through the camera of which the user’s avatar is duplicated on the display. Of course, the system gives tips on how to perform the exercises.

Breathing trainer Airofit Pro

A respiratory simulator paired with a virtual trainer in the Airofit Sport mobile application allows you to train your respiratory muscles “on the job.” The simulator is useful both for professionals who improve their sports results, and for “chronicles” (in the absence of exacerbation). Airofit Pro works due to adjustable breathing resistance during inhalation and exhalation, which leads to strengthening of the respiratory muscles and lung tissue, increasing overall endurance. During exercise, the simulator measures lung capacity and breathing force, recording and displaying…

About author

I pass by being that person liable to duty, but who cannot resist the flights of imagination. I have always loved the legends, the myths and the stories of the old and distant times with my whole being. In high school I fell in love with the history of art and I made it the object of my university studies. Once I graduated, I dusted off an old flame: that of children's literature. I rediscovered the beauty and importance of illustrated books and books, where, to a quality text, images are added that give strength and enrich what is narrated with meaning. It can be said that illustrators often make real works of art! It was then that I decided to follow this passion of mine both as a volunteer, entering the ranks of readers born to read, and in my work as a librarian. I am a greedy devoured of illustrated books (I have an absolute weakness for the stories that have bears or wolves as protagonists!), I love simple stories that know how to strike and surprise. I hate pigeon-holed books in a specific age group and readers in a certain category of readings. I think everyone is different and deserves to choose (and be chosen by the books) without constraints, in complete freedom! [email protected]
