Eyelash extensions and thickening allow you to achieve the effect of optically enlarged eyes. Thanks to this procedure, many women give up everyday make-up, because mascara is no longer necessary. Eyelash extensions and thickening allow you to achieve the effect of optically enlarged eyes. Thanks to this procedure, many women give up everyday make-up, because mascara is no longer necessary. However, this is a temporary solution, which means that the procedure must be repeated from time to time. Long-term wearing of false eyelashes can have fatal health effects.

Is eyelash thickening healthy? Avoid frequent treatments

First of all, in terms of the thickening itself, it should be emphasized that if we decide to glue eyelashes once in a while, such a procedure should not harm us much. However, a lot depends on the material used, the type of glue and skills. In addition, after the first application, our eyes can get very tired from the additional burden.

Experts emphasize that proper application is key here, as it often happens that the eyelid sticks together, and even worse, glue gets into the eye, even if only a minimal amount.

Studies have shown that as many as 60% of women who decided to have their eyelashes thickened and extended have reported inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva, due to glue getting into their eyes. It has also been established that 40% of women had an allergic reaction to the glue used. The cause is the chemical substances present in the preparation.

As reported by The Conversation, there are cases where nail glue is sold as eyelash glue. As we know, each of these products has a different purpose, composition and strength of action, which greatly affects our health, and getting the wrong substance into the eye can end fatally.

Eyelash glue composition checked. Formaldehyde and conjunctival erosion

Scientists conducted a study to verify what is actually in eyelash glue. For this purpose, they tested as many as 37 different eyelash glues, both consumer ones, i.e. available in drugstores, and those used in professional salons.

It turned out that as many as 75% of 20 professional products were detected with formaldehyde, as were four of 17 consumer adhesives. What's more, some of them did not declare such a substance in the composition, and this only shows how much we are exposed to unknowingly using a product approved for sale.

It is the aforementioned formaldehyde that causes eye irritation, redness and unsightliness. In addition, its toxicity leads to conjunctivitis and even erosion.

Conjunctival erosion is nothing more than damage to its individual layers. The symptom is continuous, very severe pain combined with photophobia and heavy tearing. In such cases, an urgent ophthalmological consultation is necessary. Treatment of erosion can take up to several weeks.

However, as scientists point out, the most common complication of eyelash extensions is inflammation of the eyelid. This is because there are hair follicles on the edges of the eyelids, the task of which is to protect the eye from microorganisms. However, when we seal this space by applying artificial eyelashes, bacteria and other microorganisms accumulate on the eyelid, leading to inflammation.
