You don't wash off your makeup before going to bed? An ophthalmologist shows what may lie ahead

Not everyone remembers that we should thoroughly wash off our makeup before going to bed. Otherwise, we can expose ourselves to unpleasant consequences. An ophthalmologist explains the potential “side effect” of going to bed without washing off waterproof mascara.

You don't wash off your makeup before going to bed? An ophthalmologist shows what may lie ahead

Despite the importance of removing makeup before going to bed, many people still forget to do it or don't see anything wrong with it. An ophthalmologist who often posts videos on TikTok and Instagram has shared the dangerous – and, let's be honest, pretty gross – potential result of wearing waterproof mascara to bed.

Eye Doctor on the Importance of Sleeping Without Makeup: The Photo Might Be Terrifying

Dr. Gurleen Dhanoa recorded a video that caused quite a stir on social media. According to the specialist, neglecting to wash off a popular cosmetic can have serious consequences.

In the video, she said anyone who sleeps with waterproof mascara should check their eyelids. She then moved to the side of the screen to show a photo of the inside of a woman’s eyelid, which had what at first glance looked like mascara particles or even mold.

She said people should stop using waterproof makeup and instead opt for water-resistant mascara. Waterproof material has less protection against penetration. Waterproof materials, on the other hand, are impermeable to water.

Dr. Dhanoa did not provide a name for the possible reaction or any further explanation.

The consequences of not removing eye makeup. They can be serious

According to the NYPost, the photo shared by the specialist may have come from the journal Ophthalmology, published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). At the time, the study revealed that the 50-year-old Australian had developed the eye disease due to “25 years of heavy mascara application and not removing it thoroughly before bed.”

BuzzFeed News explained that the mascara then formed tiny, hard deposits that settled on the skin under the eyelids. What's more, some of it fell out and then scratched the eyeballs.

The woman also developed serious conjunctivitis, an infection of the mucous membrane covering the eye and eyelid. Conjunctivitis often causes tearing, eye redness, itching, and sometimes a number of additional symptoms.

However, the study did not specify what type of mascara the woman was using.

However, when it comes to waterproof mascara, it may increase the risk of such a problem because it will be much more difficult to wash off.

It's worth listening to experts who have been warning for years that not removing makeup – especially eye makeup – can lead to serious consequences.
