Drooping eyelids – causes, treatment

Drooping eyelid is also called blepharoptosis (ptosis). It may affect one eye or both. If the eyelid already covers 1-2 mm of the iris, we talk about a drooping eyelid. This is the result of, among others, excess skin and fatty tissue that obscures the eye.

The causes may be congenital (genetic) or acquired, related to, among others: with incorrect functioning or abnormal tension of the muscles of the upper eyelids. This may be the result of injuries, diseases, medications, or the natural aging process. Sometimes it is an isolated symptom, but sometimes it is a symptom of other diseases.

If it appears suddenly – do not ignore it, discuss it with your doctor. Diseases that cause ptosis include: myasthenia gravis, cancer, stroke, muscle paresis, rheumatological diseases, heart diseases, neurological diseases. Drooping eyelids can cause eye irritation, tearing, eye fatigue, reduced field of vision, and even squinting.

Exercises for drooping eyelids

If the drooping eyelid is only an aesthetic problem, it is worth trying to cover up this defect. Make-up can help a bit, but it also needs to be done carefully, because incorrectly selected colors or techniques can make the situation worse.

Operating on drooping eyelids is a relatively simple procedure. All you need is local anesthesia and an hour-long procedure. In justified cases, there is a chance for a refund, e.g. when a drooping eyelid limits the field of vision.

Before deciding on the procedure, it is worth trying exercises that can improve the condition of the eyelids. It is recommended to practice them three minutes a day. Do two sets of 10 repetitions each time. While exercising, you can lubricate your hands with oil or cream.

  • Open your eyes wide, without raising your eyebrows or wrinkling your forehead
  • Open your eyes wide, stretching the sagging skin
  • Massage the skin above the eye from the nose to the temple, while clenching and relaxing the eyelids as if blinking.
