the origin of this ban, we find the presence of Aloe-Emodine and Emodine. these substances are potentially carcinogenic and genotoxic. According to an ecommunication from the Ministry of the Economy dated March 2022:
“In a report adopted in December 2018, the National Academy of Pharmacy expressed its concerns about the use of these plants in food supplements. Following the publication, in 2017, of an assessment conducted by EFSA highlighting the genotoxic and carcinogenic nature of certain HADs and certain plant preparations containing them, the Commission defined in a regulation management measures of risks applicable to hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HAD) which entered into force on 8 April. This regulation thus prohibits the addition of aloe-emodin, emodin and preparations in which these substances are present, as well as that of preparations of Aloe leaves containing HADs in the manufacture of food. It also places certain plant preparations (rhubarb roots, senna leaves and fruits and cascara and buckthorn bark) under Union control“.
These products must therefore not be consumed but returned to the point of sale for a refund.
