Coconut, coconut oil and its derivatives bring various health benefits, including cardioprotective, neuroprotective and anti-obesity properties. Coconut also seems to protect against diabetes.
A new study involving experts from the Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research RC Palode in India has provided an updated overview of the cardioprotective, neuroprotective and anti-obesity properties of coconut and its derivatives. For this purpose, the latest clinical data were evaluated. The results are published in the journal “Food Bioscience”.
Cardioprotective and neuroprotective
According to the researchers, various studies have shown cardioprotective and neuroprotective effects of coconut. There are also numerous clinical studies that show that coconut oil and coconut products can inhibit obesity and lower blood sugar levels, the experts add.
The ketogenic effect of coconut products results in further neuroprotective benefits and experts assume that the increased energy consumption in the metabolism of medium-chain fatty acids and so-called polyphenolic antioxidants also counteracts obesity.
Protects the heart
Another health benefit of coconut is its effect on the heart. Not only is the high antioxidant content beneficial for the heart muscle, the researchers explain that the differentiated metabolism of the medium-chain fatty acids contained in the coconut also has cardioprotective effects.
In summary, the medium-chain fatty acids, together with secondary plant substances such as polyphenols, tocopherols and other antioxidants, are the key component for the health benefits of coconut, according to the researchers.
Despite all of these proven benefits, the team says further research with more randomized, controlled, large clinical trials is needed to evaluate the optimal dosage and possible side effects of coconut.
Coconut sugar is healthier than regular sugar
An independent report from the Cleveland Clinic in the US also suggests that coconut sugar is a healthier sweetening option than most other commercial sugars.
Coconut sugar has a high nutritional value and at the same time a low glycemic index, which can be beneficial in protecting against diabetes, among other things. (as)
