Corns on feet – where do they come from?

Calluses on feet are the result of excessive pressure or friction on the skin that occurs over an extended period of time. The main causes of calluses are:

  • Improperly fitting footwear: Shoes that are too tight, loose or uncomfortable can cause constant friction or pressure on certain areas of the feet, leading to calluses. High heels increase pressure on the front of the foot, which can also contribute to their formation.
  • Prolonged walking or standing: People who spend a lot of time on their feet, especially in uncomfortable shoes, are more likely to develop calluses.
  • Foot deformities: Hallux valgus, flat feet and other foot deformities can cause uneven distribution of weight on the foot, which leads to the formation of calluses in places of excessive pressure.
  • Dry skin: Very dry skin on your feet is more susceptible to friction and cracking, which can lead to calluses.
  • Excessive foot sweating: Increased foot sweating can increase friction in shoes, which also promotes the formation of calluses.

Remember to use special tools to remove corns, such as a foot grater, instead of dangerous and unsanitized objects. This is especially important for smaller corns with a diameter of about 2 cm.

Another home remedy is to prepare a paste of turmeric, aspirin and water. It should be applied to the callus for about 10-15 minutes and then gently removed with a pumice stone. However, if we are dealing with larger skin lesions, a visit to a specialist will be the best solution. It is also worth considering buying ointments for corns or special patches available in pharmacies, which are inexpensive but can bring significant relief.
