Fermented foods such as sauerkraut and yogurt are extremely healthy for the body and, according to psychologist Dr. Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic (USA) reports that changes in the intestinal flora also contribute to a significant improvement in mental health.
“Eating fermented foods is an effective way to promote mental health,” explains the doctor in a recent press release. The proportion of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal flora increases, creating a good environment for the formation of neurotransmitters that improve our mood.
Far-reaching effects of nutrition
It has long been known that nutrition has a significant influence on physical and mental health. However, the consumption of certain unhealthy foods can also have a negative impact on well-being and even promote mental illness, explains the expert.
Eating ultra-processed foods has been proven to increase the risk of depression in those affected.
Eat more fermented foods
Fermented foods, on the other hand, are associated with a variety of health benefits. According to Dr. Albers’ psychological well-being also benefits significantly. It is therefore advisable to include more fermented foods in your diet.
However, it should be noted that these are not suitable for everyone. The expert adds that people with so-called histamine intolerance or certain digestive disorders should avoid it. If in doubt, it is advisable to seek medical examination and advice before consuming fermented foods.
Effective against anxiety and depression
The positive effect of fermented foods is also confirmed by a study whose results were published in January of this year in the English-language journal “Brain Behavior and Immunity”.
The experts involved report that fermented foods and yoghurt contain a special bacterium (Lactobacillus) that not only helps to cope with stress, but also apparently prevents anxiety and depression.
Eating fermented foods seems to be a simple yet effective way to improve mental health and protect against anxiety and depression. (as)
