Here's Why You Shouldn't Exercise With Makeup According to Experts

Although it can be tempting to get ready before a workout, makeup and exercise don’t seem like the best combination. A study even reveals that it would be preferable to avoid applying foundation during exercise. Discover the reasons and the opinions of the researchers.

Glaring differences between an effort with made-up and non-make-up skin

A new Korean study looks at the effects of foundation on the skin and pores when worn during physical exercise. It involves 43 healthy students, including 20 men and 23 women.

To carry out the experiment, participants had to apply foundation to one half of their face and leave the other without makeup. Then they ran for 20 minutes on a treadmill. The researchers examined their skin with an analysis device, before and after exercise.

What did they discover? After exercise, skin moisture increased in both makeup and no-makeup areas. However, this increase seemed more significant on the makeup half. According to the researchers, this is linked to the fact that makeup prevents moisture from evaporating from the skin.

Furthermore, after exercise they observed a greater increase in the size of pores in skin without makeup compared to skin with makeup. Wearing foundation could therefore clog your pores. At the same time, they noted that the sebum level was higher in the non-made-up areas while it decreased in the made-up areas. Thus, doing a sports session with foundation could unbalance the skin’s sebum production, causing skin dryness.

A habit to abandon according to experts

Researchers say in an article published in the “Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology” having observed “a growing trend to wear cosmetic products while practicing physical activity”.

However, the study results suggest that exercising while wearing foundation is a bad habit, especially for people with dry skin. In fact, this could further dehydrate their skin.

The results of this work therefore encourage the public to take into account the potential consequences of exercising while wearing foundation. Not letting your skin breathe enough could cause spots to appear on your facial skin! One of the authors of the study, Professor Dongsun Park, therefore concludes that “for skin health, it is best to remove makeup to exercise.”
