Resveratrol-based dietary supplements are associated with a variety of health benefits such as anti-aging effects, neuroprotective or even anti-cancer properties. But which of these can actually be proven and are there any possible risks?
In a recent review, a research team from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences evaluated the current state of knowledge on the effects and safety of resveratrol supplementation in older adults. The results are published in the specialist magazine “Phytotherapy Research”.
Benefits of resveratrol
Various previous studies have already provided evidence of demonstrable positive effects of the plant compound that occurs naturally, for example in red currants or grapes.
For example, a 2021 study concluded that the plant ingredient from grapes can effectively relieve inflammation. Other studies have also suggested cardioprotective, preventative and even therapeutic effects against cancer, but the results have remained partially contradictory.
Effect and safety checked
To conduct a comprehensive assessment of the effects and safety of resveratrol supplements in older adults, the research team reviewed and systematically reviewed the available randomized clinical trials. A total of ten studies were taken into account in the detailed evaluation.
The researchers found that the combination of resveratrol supplements and physical exercise has benefits for muscle function in healthy older adults and improves physical performance in people with functional limitations.
Benefits for cognitive functions
Resveratrol shows potential neuroprotective effects in people with Alzheimer’s disease, and positive effects on cognitive functions can also be seen in overweight people, the team reports. However, in overweight people, high doses also increased biomarkers for the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
In older adults with diabetes and in people with peripheral artery disease, resveratrol was no more effective than a placebo, the research team continued. And no study reported significant adverse events after resveratrol treatment.
Further clinical studies required
The researchers conclude that resveratrol can improve various parameters in age-related health disorders, although the optimal dosage, long-term effects and possible drug interactions still need to be examined in further randomized clinical trials. (fp)
