Propolis ointment – uses

It’s no secret that pharmacies offer many high-quality cosmetic products at attractive prices. Many people associate classic ointments, such as vitamin A ointment or zinc ointment. However, one of the less known, but equally effective, products is propolis ointment. The main ingredient of this ointment is propolis, i.e. bee glue. It is a substance known for its antibacterial, antifungal, disinfecting and moisturizing properties. Additionally, it contains vitamins A, E and F, which accelerate the skin regeneration process. Propolis ointment is also a rich source of allantoin and D-panthenol, which have a nourishing, moisturizing effect and improve skin elasticity.

This product has a wide range of uses and is suitable for various skin problems. It is perfect for minor skin damage, such as abrasions, blemishes, insect bites and burns. It has a nourishing, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect, accelerates the healing process and helps prevent the formation of scars. Propolis ointment is also an effective agent in the fight against stretch marks. Perfect for foot care, it has a preventive antifungal effect and intensively moisturizes and softens the skin of the feet, especially in case of problems with dry and cracked heels.

Propolis – bee glue: what properties does it have?

Propolis, also called bee glue, is a sticky and thick substance that bees use to line the inside of the hive. Thanks to this, they protect and strengthen the structure of the hive and protect it against pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. Propolis is produced by bees from tree and flower resins, and the main sources of these resins may be trees such as poplar, willow, ash, alder, birch or oak, as well as coniferous trees with damaged bark, such as spruce, fir or pine.

The color of propolis may vary depending on the type of plant resins used, and may be red-orange, yellow-greenish, or even brown. It is a substance that responds to temperature changes – at 15°C it is hard and brittle, at 36°C it becomes plastic, and at 70°C it flows. However, propolis does not dissolve in water, although it can be dissolved in organic solvents such as alcohol.

The composition of propolis is variable and depends on many factors, such as the type of plant from which the resin comes, the breed of bees, the season, the location of the hive and the level of environmental pollution. The chemical composition of propolis may also be modified during processing by bees. Among the main ingredients
