What are the risks involved?
According to the official document on the Government website, the reason for the recall is the identification of higher than expected levels of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). The risk ? An intoxication.
DEHP, or diethylhexylphthalate, is a chemical compound used as a plasticizer, primarily in the manufacture of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products. It is commonly used in a variety of applications including plastic films, pipes, toys, flooring, and medical products like tubing and transfusion bags. However, DEHP is also known for its adverse effects on human health. It is considered an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to various health problems, including developmental and reproductive effects, as well as potential risks to the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
Nowadays, DEHP is banned in all toys and childcare articles intended for children (see European Directive 2005/84/EC). The use of this substance is also prohibited in cosmetics as it is considered carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMR substance). (See the European Cosmetics Directive)
